Several Weeks Demolishes Car Injures Pas x The Campaign is Warming Up RALEIGH N Oct David Peebles and Sewell attempted to drive a car decorated with their Hoover banners in the Smith parade here today A mob of spectators broke ranks at the curb halted the car smashed its headlights wrenched off a door ripped up the tery slashed a tire and plastered the body with Smith stickers Jewell and Peebles fled Nettie Martin 26 wife of Elmer Martin of south of Navarre arid her two children Woodrow nine and June four narrowly escaped instant death early Thursday evening when an automobile in which they were riding was hit by a Wheel ing and Lake Erie railroad en gine at the Main street grade crossing Navarre Mothers Condition Serious Mrs Martin is the most seriously Injured and her recovery today was considered doubtful She had her skull fractured Woodrow sustained skull fracture and a broken right leg and his condition also is serious The condition of the little girl is not serious and was improved this af She has a severe scalp lac andis bruised about the face Trie Martin family was moving from its home south of Navarre to a new residence near Newman and the car in which the motherland her two children were riding was partly filled Allow ing but short distance in the rear was Martin on a truck load of house After seeing the engine automobile carrying his wife and children he rushed to thede to the office of P E Gilmore while Bothers attracted by noise of the impact took and sonto the residence of Graf ton Gad All later were removed in Hugs the city hospital where they now are confined It Is believed Mrs Martin driver of the car did not see the approach ing westbound engine as automobiles parked along the highway are said to have obstructed a clear view of the tracks A meet being held at the Navarre school located but a short distance from the crossing and an unusually large number of cars were parked along the street it is said The engine was traveling west after having pulled an eastbound train up a grade east of Navarre A similar accident occurred at the crossing early Sunday morning September 23 when the puller crashed into an automobile containing three mem bers
