succession a denun of the city council by Mayor rving Ferrell who charged tue leg body with being slow a counter attack by B B Allen pre siding officer who scored the admin and championed the actions of the council and a free and plain spoken flow of oratory that lasted from the time the city fathers went into session until after 10 oclock featured the regular meeting of the council Monday evening Not much legislative action was taken by the council laet night but a tremendous lot of words were tossed back and forth on the lent waters of the city administra tion as the executive and legislative branches of the city government ar rayed against each other in battle alignment paraded around with chips on their shoulders and got a lot of things off their chests The peaceful calm of one of the hottest July nights in years was shattered when Mayor Irving Ferrell rose to his feet and in no uncertain terms raked the council from top to bottom for its alleged lack of action In passing legislation of importance to the city The chest quite a number of thing which have been rankling the chief executive for some time past But hardly had he resumed his seat before Councilman Allen was killed by the bullet from an assassins gun early ast Friday morning became known following a conference here Monday afternoon between Detec tive Slater and Chief of Police E M Ertle Slater famous Cincinnati detec tive who gained considerable pres tige when he secured a confession from Jake Nesbitt that he killed his young wife in Troy last February has been placed in charge of an in being conducted by the county through Stark County Prose cutor C B McClintock Since arriving in Canton Slater has been working day and night run ning down information and leads which may solve the mystery sur rounding the publishers murder and the identity of the gunman who fired the shot which snuffed out his life Chief Ertle today would not give out any information concerning his conference with Detective Slater He said that Slater came to lon to confer with him but further than that the chief was silent Canton this morning declared that Massillon might hare been the base from which the slayer or slayers oE Mellett operated dur ing the days prior to the killing Slater is quoted as saying that he found many interesting things in Massillon but he has not revealed any of the information he secured here Warren also figures in the Mellett investigation Canton police and de are in Warren today in an effort to gain information about an automobile which might have car ried the slayer from suspects in the murder of Lon R Mellett Canton publisher and investigating the crime are running down leads Detective Ora Slater the Stark county inquiry the information by underworld mem bers underworld usually is right was Slaters only comment on that phase of the inquiry George V Armstrong Cincinnati detective arrived this morning to help Slater County Prosecutor Mc Clintock employed
