the board of health the health commission and health officials stand by and allow its spread Already there are a number of cases at Horace Mann school where the disease was first observed It has spread to Whittier school and one at Longfellow Un less the board of health takes immediate steps to protect the children the disease may run its course through every build ing leaving a trail of misery Against the disease parents teachers and principals have been fighting singlehanded They appealed last week to Mayor Vogt to call on Friday a special meeting of the board of When asked Friday if he had called the meeting as requested the mayor answered in the negative and declared hs had decided to wait until the regular meeting e Meanwhile the epidemic is spreading Mothers of the Horace Mann school in desperation over the shameful indifference and of local officials have gone to Canton and consulted a skin specialist The specialist declared the disease a form of winter said that un less checked promptly it might afflict a child until next spring The specialist gave the women a prescription of which 200 been made up but they cannot be distributed it is said until the health commission gives permission In the meantime Mayor Vogt declines to call a special meeting taxpayers are paying for a nurse in the schools This nurse is expected to make inspections Children suffer ing from certain diseases she may send home Children suf fering with winter itch although infectious she is powerless to send home without authority of the board of health and they remain to spread corruption Meanwhile not one word of advice comes from health commission Mayor Vogt will not call a special meet ing The time is long past for the officials to act The mothers t who have been battling the disease who have seen their chil dren tortured all night long and reduced to bundles of nerves by the loathsome infection and the public in general are weary of such inexcusable inaction as it Is
