LAW VIOLATION Morris Coren East Main Street on Trial Today Morris Coren Bast Main street druggist today was on trial in mu court on a charge of unlaw fully possessing Intoxicating liquor filed against him on December 29 1920 when police officers searched his place of business and are alleged to have uncovered a quantity of whiskey Attorneys representing Mr Coren were attempting to show that the li found in his place of business was held by the druggist under a per mit issued In 1919 by federal authorities granting him the privilege to having whiskey for me purposes Officers testifying In the case said that when they searched the drug store they found a half pint bottle lied with whiskey which had been Placed on a shelf In an elevator shaft in the rear of the store A number of empty half pint bottles bearing the same labels as the bottle containing the whiskey also the officers said Corens store was searched on De cemper 29 1920 testimony snowed but Coren was not taken into custo dy until that evening when he re turned from Columbus The case is probably the first of Its Wnd tried here and a great deal of interest was manifested in its out come William C Hineman of Columbus federal prohibition inspector and as to J A Shearer director in for the state said that Coren had been given a permit to havo whiskey for medicinal purposes on October 15 1919 and that this permit had been revoked on March 1920 He said that Coren had filed application for a new permit on March 24 1920 but bat no permit had been granted Mr Hineman said that Coren had nr operative permit in his possession al lowing him to have whiskey on De cember 29 1920 He also testified that no application was now pending for a new permit During his testimony Mr Hine man said that while the permits were issued by the federal prohibition com at Washington the district and his agents had the pow i or to revoke such permits Attempts of attorneys defending Coren to show the arrest of on a charge of violating the li law was due to a malicious at tack by a competitor as alleged hy Coren in a statement after his ar rest were overruled by Judge Kaley The case was expected to consume the greater part of the day Four wit had testified up to noon Cor en was expected to take tho stand In his own defense some time this after noon R H HIckck safety director who was acting chief of police at the time Coren was arrested told the court that the liquor and evidence secured In Corens store had been placed by him in a safety deposit vault in a lo cal bank for safe Coren was represented by Attor neys
