Upon By Snipers By the Associated Press Firemen were the targets of snipers early today in WinstonSalem N C af ter a night of violence Mon day with Negroes clashing with police in San Francis co police and firemen fired at in Cairo and two fire bombings in a Negro district of Des Moines Iowa In WinstonSalem two bursts of gunshots were leveled at fire men as they sought to put out a rash of trashcan fires near a public housing development in a Negro section The firefighters finally let the blazes burn them selves out The disturbance in San Fran cisco broke out after police raided a headquarters of the Black Panther party Monday night A television cameraman was beaten by a group of Negro youths and hospitalized with broken facial bones Passersby were threatened cars were smashed and passing police cars peppered with bottles and rocks until a fog rolled in and cooler tempers Police arrested 16 Police said the trouble started when a squad car passed by Panther headquarters and returned to its banks and tiie Cottonwood grudgingly started to recede The bottom dropped out of the Neosho River flood this morning as the meas was reported at six feet The at I stood at feet still feet out of its banks A Emporia Fire De rescue squad pulled two Teachers College students from the Cotton wood River Monday nearly two hours after the youths canoe capsized pitching the pair into the icy waters Lyon County Sheriffs officers said the youths 22yearold Doug las Hime of Augusta and 23year old Robert Boyer of Overland Park both living at 1215 Sylvan in Emporia launched their canoe one and onehalf miles west and one mile south of Em poria The craft capsized min utes later just north of the Coun ty Farm bridge they said Officers said Boyer walked out of the flood area and called for aid from the Sardis Church He had with Hime ami walked back into he river to try to locate him officers snid Meanwhile the rescue squad and a plane from the Emporia Municipal Airport piloted by Dean Morford of the Kansas Flying Service accompanied by David began the search Searchers were not aware that Boyer had walked back into tho flood officers said Morford quickly spotted Boyer who had taken refuge on the bridge and he was picked up by the Fire Department boat Morford was called off of the search since it was believed that only one youth in the water However as Morford turned to return io the airport he spot ted the second boy to a log jam around a bend in the river channel At the rescue team of Lieut Robert Lo gan Firemen Tom Euler ind Larry the youths to the edge of the flood wa ters Both were taken home by Sheriffs officers apparently nei ther seriously harmed by the ordeal said The rescue squad answered another call Monday evening to pick up five persons stranded at the Rocky
