survey of City Depart ment heads today indicated that at least 42 employes would bo laid off as pint of a campaign to keep the citys budget within tls in come The City Parks and Recreation Department will be hardest hit with 16 employes laid off accord ing to reliable sources in tl at de The Street Department which was recently reduced by 25 em ployes was reported considering laying off eight more ABOUT 15 employes of th City Engineering Department ha ye al ready been laid off and ft om 8 to 10 more are to be pink slipped The layoffs will probably be announced next week when Coun cil approves the budget for the fiscal year March I 1964 to Feb 28 196i There are a total o 2300 city employes In other departments Inspection will lose two pal Shops will lay off three Per two Purchasing one and Police Court two THERE WILL be no change in the Police and Fire Departments Their budgets will remain the tame Wed like to have mon po a police official said but we will not increase our staff We are short nine men now We expect to be able tc hire nine more men in March to bring our force up to its full strength All indications are that there will be no reduction of staff in the Sanitation affairs for the Center They arrived in El Paso to take part In the Pilot Space Science Symposium By JANE PEMBERTON On short space flights US Astronauts soaring through space are too busy to be bored but the problem of how to pass the time will certainly concern men on longer flights So says Neil A Armstrong one of the new group of Astronauts now in training for the Gemini and Apollo projects The sandy spaceman who has an Ike Eisenhower grin and a great deal of the same sort of personal ap peal may someday be one of he first men to set foot on the HE ARRIVED in El Paso today to take part in the Pilot Space Science Symposium being held in conjunction with the Southwestern Science Exposition He was ac companied by Donald T Grego ry technical assistant to the di rector of the National Aeronaut ics and Space Administrations Manned Spacecraft Center at short flights have kept busy mon the crafts various sys tems and observing the strange new world of space WE ARE CERTAINLY con about the proper amount of work and rest cycles on long er flights he said Mea ii space must leam to adjust tc nights and days which are only an hour or so long He said the Navy uses a sys tern of white and
