PRICE FIVE CENTS Schools Plan Record Million Budget 103 More Teachers On Payroll Final Approval ft Received For New High Building El Paso Public School of today were preparing a 195859 budget that is ex to exceed mil high It provides for hiring 103 mor teachers to take care of an aver age daily attendance increase 2600 Were trying to keep the budge under million said tendent H E Charles But the city is growing at the rate of 2500 or more additional school children a year That means more teachers ana more buildings New School Approved Mr Charles announced of final approval by the Texas Edu cation Agency and the Federa Housing and Home Corp of fund for the new million Irvin High School to be built in the Mountain View area Federal funds totaling were alloted for the school The new budget contemplates no increase in salaries Instruction and construction costs are the major items Build ings already under construction are to be financed by funds ear in last years budget Build Ings starting after Sept 1 are budgeted for the coming fisca year 1574 Teachers For the school year ended the budget was Employment of 103 additional teachers will bring the total num ber of in the schools Germany saw a film which catapulted Jencks into and touched off a series of vio ence threats charges and counter charges that held the nations in terest about five years ago The movie was Salt of the Earth filmed in and near Silver City and denounced as Commu nist sponsored by Representative Donald Jackson California Demo crat from the floor ofthe U S House of Representatives Convict This film and other develop ments led to a series of trials and appeals bitter accusations and turnabout witnesses that finally culminated in a Supreme Court decision Jencks was charged convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for falsely swearing he was not a Communist But on appeal the case prompted an important Supreme Court decision that re in Jencks freedom The caie it tangled into several oases In making the movie backed by the International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers union members were used as extras was ousted from the CIO in 1950 for al Communist domination Then too there was the key testimony of Harvey Matusow the sensational turnabout witness whose testimony first convicted Jencks than later exonerated him Union Spokesman And here was the Jencks trial in El Paso that brought testimony from many admitted But it probably was the movie as much as anything that put Jencks in the public eye He was an inter national representative of the Mine Mill and a spokesman for the union in 1953 when the controversial movie was filmed near Silver City It was basedon a miners strike produced by Independent Produc tion Corp Inc directed by black listed Hollywood Writer Paul Jerrico and starred Rosaura Re vueltas a professional Mexican ac tress filming of movie stirred up violence and threats of violence Jencks was assaulted on the streets of Silver City The film crew final ly left
