Me PER WEEK HOME EDITION PRICE FIVE CENTS Jury Weighs Dr Sheppards Fate Accepts Offer Hopes to Discuss Fate of 11 Pliers Bv Associated UNITED NATIONS N Y Dec N Secretary Gen eral Dag Hammarskjold today accepted an invitation fof face to face Red Chinas Chou Enlai in Peiping The secretary general acted less than four hours after he had re a cable from the Chinese Communist Premier saying Ham marskjold would be welcome if he wished to discuss questions related to world peace and international tension Not Ruled Out Although Chou did not agree to discuss the 11 American fliers jailed as spies Hammarskjold was understood to feel that such talks had not teen ruled out For this reason he accepted without delay The exact date of Hammar skjolds departure for Peiping and for the talks was not fixed but the secretary general intends to go as soon as arrangements can be worked out The exchange of messages grew out of a resolution adopted by the U N General Assembly last Friday condemning the Peiping regime for holding the fliers and directing the secretary general to do his best to win their release Sent Cable Hammarskjold immediately sent off a cable proposing direct talks with Chou He received two cables from the Communist leader this morning one denouncing the ac tion as illegal and the other he would receive Hammarskjold for talks at a date to be decided upon by the secretary general In reply Hammarskjold sent two cables The first merely edged the receipt of Chous blast against the Assembly and informed Chou that the message was being circulated to U N members Second Message The second said I acknowledge receipt of your cable No 38 of 17 December con my proposal for a visit to Peiping I look forward to the op of meeting you In view of tha necessary practical
