ATLANTIC s WASHINGTON April German submarine today fired on the V destroyer Smith about 100 miles south of New York In official circles here this is taken to indicate that the German submarine blockade of Atlantic ports has begun especially of those thru which supplies for the allies abc being shipped The navy reports said the submarine was sighted at this morning apparently submerged It fired a torpedo at the Smith missing by about thirty yards and then disappeared The wake of the torpedo could be plain ly seen Further details are lacking and it is unknown whether the presence foreshadows only a sporadic raid or is the call for the beginning of a submarine blockade of the Atlantic coast With the sub marine war to America the possibility of a German submarine base on this sido of the Atlantic is again revived The action is the first German recognition of the state of war declared by the United States Tho raid of tbe and the two trips of the demonstrated the possibility of submarines to escape the British fleet and make their way to American coasts Whether a submarine could make the trip and then return without a supply base somewhere on this side is gravely doubled Many officials here believe that the had a mother ship somewhere down on the horizon The possibility that merchant submarines of the type now converted to carriers of fuel oil and supplies accompany flotilla of war boats on is as being ever present The possibility that bases have been planted by the man raiders recently at large in the South Atlantic is also one of the fore- most problems It is even suspected that parts of submarines were shipped to Mexico and assembled there for raids in American waters but by many well officials this is doubted GERMANS LOSE SPRING PHOTOGRAPHS WILL SOON BE
