Democrat-Tribune (Newspaper) - June 1, 1921, Jefferson City, Missouri Daily JOSEPH GOLDMAN EDITOR PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING EXCEPT SUNDAY COLE COUNTY DEMOCRAT PRINTING CO JEFFERSON CITY MO WEDNESDAY JUNE 1 DAILY SUBSCRIPTION RATES Per Cents One Entered in the PostojEce at Jefferson City Mis souri a3 Second Class Matter TELEPHONE NUMBER 213 A PLEA FOR HUMANITY The German government hlus decided to practically confiscate onefourth of all the property in that country as v start on paying the for damages occasion by tihe war There is no burden on the civilized world today equal to the taxes imposed for war and growing cut of war Ninetythree cents out of every dollar collected by the government of the United States goes for war debts and war purposes one kind or another The tax in this I is small in comparison taxes in Europe The civilized world is being taxed to death today Every government is idding to its expenses I And still civilization has not sense enough to decide that shall be no more wars and no more armies If ever the white people on earth needed a second Moses it is at this time Clergymen preach against war against murder and things that bring about starvation disease and poverty and no them It is not strange that some are casting about to know if it is not time some man or men were coming to front for humanity and for the general wellbeing of all mankind and saying that the edict of God against murder shall become a fact as well as a theory among civilized people There has been ho great preacher in the civilized world in more than 100 years As a weapon against war tho churches are all failures Their the ories are all right but they do not get anywhere Taxes are growing in our own country and as stated the great burden of all government taxes is debts pensions getting ready for another war etc and teaching young men how to kill other men State Grain James T Bradshaw is in the city getting ready for his trial before Governor Hyde at tihe close of next week on various charges trumped up by the Governor to get him out of office and put a Republican in the job In reality the only complaint against Mr Bradshaw is thiat he is Democrat He was duly appointed and confirmed for a period extending nearly two years in the future but because he is a Democrat and Was ap pointed Democrats under him and there is an army of hungry Republicans most of them from the third congressional district bellowing for the Governor has been compelled to make charge against Mm which he will try himself as judge prosecutor informer and jury Mr Bradshaw is going to put up a fight knowing that he has done noth ing wrong and is by long odds the best official who evor held this office in Mis souri He will be represented by Frank H Farris of Bella and Judge John f Williamson of Kansas City No doubt Governor Hyde will decide against This is deemed certain He must either do so or find his own charges false A way will be found beyond doubt to get the before the Supreme Court where justice can be expected TRAMP PRINTER A MEMORY Linotype Has Displaced the Knight of the I tell you mates the day will come when theyll set type by Jim Laidlaw tramp printer made this statement more fifty years ago while sticking type on a small in the middle West Jim had a pen chant for prophecy and few paid any attention to him He even had the temerity to forecast that man would eventually conquer the air and fly like a bird It was the genius of Otto Mergen thaler that made good for Jim revo newspaper printing with the linotype and eliminated tCie tourist printer While the Mer was by no means the first typesetting machine it was the first successful substitute for hand compo sition The year of the Worlds Fair in Chicago in 1893 saw the lino com ing into general use and marked the the end of the old time comp and Mand composition on newspapers Printers the country over looked upon the machine as a calamity and tihe ruination of their trade But while the typesetting machine proved itself the friend of both boss and men and a to the trade generally it did sound the death knell of that picturesque species of the craft variously know as knights of itinerant of frame or sit He seldom stayed long in place much preferring tlhe life of subbing to hold ing cases in any office The tramp printer roamed over the from the lakes to the Gulf and from Maine to the Pacific Coast rarely riding in trains much preferring to hit the ties on his journeys he had plenty of time for reflection On a town out of work and funds he usually made the public library his ters Many of these men in this way picked up a wealth of knowledge thai few printers of this day posses As a rule the knight of the road was generous to a fault When stranger town the first ques tion asked him was Did you eat or Hava you gat a room These courtesies were given and ac without comment or thanks Indeed these men were often knights in very truth If they their vices they had their virtues too generosity and good fellowship were net the least of them ENGLISH AS SHE IS WRITTEN IN 1921 the stick and rule prin Only a few years ago every news paper manifested by the who gathered to attend the funeral of the Empress Vic toria The German princes passed virtual ly unnoticed the crowds but wherever the popular field marshal went there was a murmur of admira tion which frequently swelled into prolonged applause Even the Com who could be distinguished by their remarks were Hindenburg they spoke loudly about tin soldiers als other high officers sell at 30 cents a bushel in country The probabilities are that the are overstocked with new potatoes and fearing they will lose most of them are selling for what they can get IT II A Perfect Vacation Inthe Frank Statts a young deaf and man of Boone county is on trial for his life at Columbia this week Judge David Harris It is charged that he shot and killed stepgrandfather Samuel Halstead about one year ago Halstead was 72 years old and he and hfe wife were both mutes Nearly 100 witnesses have been summoned and the trial will last all week Mdst of the witnesses are deaf and dumb and as some of them are not educated the process of taking testimony will be very slow It is said that only circumstantial evidence point to the young mute as the slayer of his aged relative Circumstantial
