Christmas Fund gets early sendoff By BONNIE BALDWIN Daily Times Staff Writer Believe it or not the 1976 Daily Times Merry Christmas Fund already has a balance of Thanks to one early bird that is Richard Home 37 of Lower Chichester has been sending checks to the fund since June I know I'll be the first for the Christmas Home wrote in a note accompanying his first check You'll get a check from me every month from now through Christmas He explained in a telephone in- that he likes to be first I was one of the first to send in last year he said But Home had another reason for giving to the Merry Christmas fund now in its sixth year I like to help people It's just a small he said The fund is an annual Daily Times effort to aid the Salvation Army in Chester with its Christmas projects Salvation Capt Robert Pfeiffer was excited about Home's idea Maybe other people will want to do the same he said That would be Capt Pfeiffer said the Salvation Army will budget at least for Christmas this year and one-third of that will hopefully come from the Merry Christmas Fund The economic picture really hasn't changed that much in Chester this he said Last year we helped 600 families This year we'll probably have more requests and food and toys will cost more The captain said the fund usually buys all of the toys given out at Christmas and a portion of the food dime goes toward Christmas he said The Christmas fund was begun in 1971 It raised more than the first year and climbed to a peak of in 1974 More than was collected last Christmas We should be able lo raise this Capt Pfeiffer said In past years groups have held baked food sales dances and to raise money for the fund Office groups have contributed in lieu of Christmas cards Some donations have been made anonymously or in memory of loved ones Home included a short message in each of his checks Keep trying don't give Live for You'll survive if there is were examples Enjoying his own idea Home has given more frequently than he originally promised I know how much I'll give he said 1 just live day to day Home is a bachelor employed by the A P Tea Co His claim to fame is a in the Delaware In- stant Lottery earlier this year In addition to giving toys and food to poor families in the Chester area the Salvation Army sponsors parties and delivers gifts to each resident in area nursing homes at Christmas The Army raises the remainder of the money needed for Christmas through mail drives and sidewalk collections The 1976 Merry Christmas fund campaign will officially begin Thanksgiving Day talks called documentation of his own Kenney then said Edgar had launched a personal attack ting him to me his own charges with the committee Kenney was not available this morning to comment on Mrs It was Mrs Smith who secured most of the material which formed the basis of the pamphlet The fabricated headlines are Mrs Smith said in her letter to Kenney They are not even statements taken out of context or voting record with that of U S Rep Bella calling them 96 per cent similar The Republican National Committee's research division in Washington could only come up with a 76 per cent coincidence on its computer Mrs Smith said she recommended this figure be used But they decided to go with the 96 per cent which they found on a flyer put out by the Americans for Con- she said About that time Mrs Smith who went to work for Kenney on Feb 13 as the first person on his staff began to have doubts her usefulness as a researcher In April she wrote a letter to that effect offering to stay until a
