SATURDAY JULY 12 1975 FIFTEEN CENTS r companion caught in Idaho Frank A Metzger 38 of Middletown sought for nearly a year as a suspect in the slaying of his wife Martha has been arrested by the FBI in Boise Idaho it was announced Friday Also arrested was Metzger's girl friend year-old Diane L Hamill a former Ridley Township resident Both were charged with murder the FBI said Last September Metzger's four children were found abandoned in a motel in Dunkirk which is midway between Erie and Buffalo N Y Several days later Martha Metzger's body was found in a shallow grave behind a house in Farnham 15 miles northeast of Dunkirk on Metzger and Miss Hamill were to be arraigned before a U.S magistrate in Boise pending ex- tradition to Buffalo where they will stand trial on murder charges an FBI spokesman in falo said today Miss Hamill's father David A Hamill 313 Baker St Ridley Township said his daughter had called him early today from Boise Hamill said his daughter had told him she was being held and that she had been read her legal rights but that was all he knew Metzger and Miss Hamill who have been sought on a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution were traced by the FBI from Buffalo to California and finally to Boise Martha lived at 204 E Dutton Mill Road Middletown was 29 at the time of her death She and her four children were reported missing on Aug after a neighbor found the house empty and became suspicious Police were uncertain that a crime had taken place until five weeks later when the body was found Mrs Metzger was beaten then suffocated possibly with a pillow according to the medical report Police are not certain whether she was killed in New York or in her home on the night of Aug 1974 the night before she was reported missing The body may have been transported to New York in the trunk of a car The Metzger children said their father who had been separated from his wife for nearly three years woke them that night put them in a car and drove to New York State with Miss Hamill The house in Farnham had been rented in July about a month before the murder Metzger Miss Hamill and the four children lived there for five weeks and the children attended elementary school in Farnham New York State Police said Metzger went to elaborate lengths to confuse police He rented cars under assumed names and signed leases for many houses and apartments without ever leaving deposits In September Metzger allegedly told his children there was a gas leak in the house and took them to a motel just outside Dunkirk He said he would return later but never did The children Frank Jr 11 David 10 Christopher 7 and Stuart 5 were found by the motel manager Several days later Mrs Metzger's body was found in a grave behind the Farnham house A second grave deeper and wider was also found and police speculated the second grave was meant for the children Delaware County Child Care Services has placed the four Metzger children in a foster home
