convention AP Wirephoto Police Clash With About 20000 PHILADELPHIA AP Scientists said Wednesday they think the mystery disease that has killed 22 persons since an American Legion convention here last month was probably caused by a virus a fungus or a toxic substance but they still have not identified it Whatever it is its one of the most dangerous things in the world said Jay Satz Pen top virologist Ive never seen anything like it Researchers at a state labo in Philadelphia and the federal Center for Disease Con trol in Atlanta have been work ing since Monday to try to determine what caused the disease which has hospi 130 persons Stale officials have confirmed 22 deaths and Philadelphia hospital officials said Wednesday a 23rd victim had died But that last death was not included in the official death toll CDC Director Dr David J Sencer told an Atlanta news conference Wednesday that scientists do not know what the disease is but weve Rioting Explodes In Black Township Of Soweto Again ruled out most of the important bacterial We cannot say it is swine in or say that it is not Sencer said adding that it ap has been confined to those persons who have died or are now being treated Each day that goes by with out a spread from family to community makes us rest eas ier that it is not swine flu Sen cer said But it is still too early to say The possible causes he listed virus fungus or toxic sub stance result in a variety of diseases Influenza is caused by a virus fungus causes relatively rare diseases generally spread by inhalation and a toxic substance could be any poisonous matter Researchers are taking sam ples of blood cells and mouth scrapings and injecting the material into mice and eggs trying to reproduce and then isolate the disease Were under a lot of pres sure sure because I guess people from all over the coun try or the world are watching to sec what we find out here and at the CDC but my people are doing a great job said Satz who heads a team of 11 researchers at the state lab I cant say when well find it its just a process of going through the steps testing and checking Like I said we think were pretty sure its a virus but it could be a different type maybe something that no one has ever seen The lab a stone building on a hospital com pound in a rundown section of is guarded round the clock Its quiet except for the trucks rumbling up in front their drivers bringing in the small packages of more samples We really got a lot of stuff samples Monday night It just poured in Since then its slowed down but were still getting all we can handle State Health Secretary Leon ard Bachman said doctors are having trouble treating the dis ease because they dont know what to treat Some are getting an and some arent and that hasnt had an effect one way or the other Bachman told a news conference in Philadelphia All those who have come down with the disease either at tended or had some contact with a state American Legion convention last month in Phila delphia The dead range in age disease and its symptoms which include fever chills and lung congestion officials say they havent yet ruled anything out When the disease is fied Bachman said the state can begin a crash tion program If it is swine flu such a program could begin within a short tune since state officials have been preparing an flu campaign tor several weeks The four drug companies manufacturing the swine flu vaccine have said 90 million doses of the vaccine are avail able State health officials said all the persons affected were among the estimated 10000 per sons who attended the legion convention or were in some way connected with it They said there have been no confirmed cases yet of secon dary infection which would mean the disease is spreading but refused to rule out the pos it could be infectious While theories ran the gamut See DEATHS Page 2A LISTENS TO QUESTION Dr Leonard Bachman Pen State Secretary of Health listens to a
