PHILADELPHIA Delaware County rail commuters have until Friday to stock up on tickets at the current fare The SEPTA board Monday unanimously approved a per cent hike in rail fares on all 13 commuter lines including three in the county The increase will be effective Friday but any tickets purchased before then will be accepted for the next 60 days A second resolution adopted Related Page 4 Monday offers hope of more longed relief for ticket hoarders in Delaware County The board called for an ex- amination of fare zones to be completed by July 1 The study will include suggestions on how to alter the zones to make fares more equitable THE REPORT could lead to reduced fares for county riders who now pay more per mile than commuters on any other lines in the system Delaware County SEPTA board members John MacMurray and Edmund Jones drew attention to the fare inequities earlier this month during a public hearing on the increases MacMurray testified that the best way to equalize fares would be to restructure the zone system He admitted a restructuring would take time and mended as an alternative fare hikes ranging from 10 to 30 per cent Hearing examiner Nathan Posner rejected the out of the running for the post Republican Joseph T Labrum Jr has one election to a different county judgeship and Democrat C Norwood Wherry is no longer interested So Monday Lawrence J Beaser counsel to Gov Milton J Shapp wrote to Hennessey asking for three more names for the Orlowsky vacancy Earlier Cherpack county Democratic chairman said she had Snyder in mind when she checked to see if the office was still interested in filling the vacancy since any new appointee will serve only until the end of the year Candidates have already been nominated to run in the ember election to fill the six years remaining in the late Judge 10 year term after this year MRS CHERPACK said both she and State Sen John James Sweeney District of Upper Darby had recommended Snyder to the governor's office as a possible appointee to the vacancy She said Snyder was ideal for the appointment because he is highly qualified and at age 75 is too old to run and therefore would be no threat to the Re- publicans as a possible judicial candidate in a future election Mrs Cherpack said querying the governor's office on Snyder was not intended to by-pass the merit selection process but was only an extra added step She said Snyder would have to go through the merit selection process and said the commission would probably invite other Cherpack said it was unlikely many other lawyers would be of damage that would
