346 GRAND RAPIDS WIS THURSDAY JULY 11915 TEN CENTS A WEEK POINT IS NOT DRY Meeting of the Council Last Earring Grants Licenses to Saloon Keepers Who Have Not Been Arrested During Year After a week of hot fighting on the part of the minority who stuck out for granting saloon licenses the council at Stevens Point at a special meeting last evening decided to grant licenses to some of the applicants A special to the Leader today says that the council granted licenses to those saloon keepers who were not arrested during the past year for violating the liquor laws Just how many there were who fail ed to secure the privilege of running CITY TO HAVE SANE FOURTH NO PRETENSE OF CELEBRATION HERE ON HOUSES TO CLOSE Grand Fourth of July cele bration next Monday will be one of the sanest the city has ever had even the pretense of a celebra the day And the celebration will consist solely ofa suspension of business and the firing of firecrackers and other harm less noisemaking inventions accord ing to the dictates of young America Everybody will go to Marshfield and everybody expects to have the time of their lives The only thing in the way of any doings here will be the ball game at the south side ball park be tween Nekoosa and Portage A num ber of the smaller villages in the county will hold celebrations however and some of our people will attend them as they will be more on the or der of a picnic than the Marshfield celebration Kellner and Arpin are two of the smaller places that promise old fashioned celebrations of this city will regard the day There will be a suspension of business closing of banks and city grocery stores and the clothing stores will close at nine a m Meat markets at 10 a in bakeries at noon hardware stores will j remain closed from 9 to 4 oclock and other business places will be closed all day The usual holiday hours will be ob served at the saloons our correspondent did not state but it is said here that it is a large number It was the plan to take up at last nights meeting what is known as the saloon ordinance and reconsider it This Ordinance was vetoed by the mayor a week or so ago In order to pass this ordinance over the mayors veto it would require nine votes From the reports received there today it appears as though one of the eight aldermen on the side of the drys had flopped THE BOARD OF REVIEW ANNUAL MEETING WILL BE HELD DUR ING THE COMING WEEK TO HEAR KICKS The board of review will be in ses sion during the coming week The date of the first meeting is July 5th but as this is the day of observing In dependance Day the initial meeting will be Commencing on thai date the board will probably be in session a number of days thus giving those if any there be who think their assessment is too high an opportunity to appear and present such evidence as they may have to sustain their contentions Some think this board can either re duce or increase assessments at will This is not the case The board can only change assessments when con by sworn testimony that this should be done The board is composed of Mayor Cohen City Clerk Brown City At torney Briere Aldermen Jackson and Jeffrey and Pete McCamley THREE MORE TAKEN IN ALLEGED HUERTA PLOT RECEIVE PRESENTS CITIZENS NATIONAL BANK MAILING OUT THEIR FIRST DIVIDEND TODAY Stockholders of the Citizens Na tional Bank are today receiving nice presents in the way of dividends Some days ago the bank officials sent out notices that a two per cent dividend had been declared This is the first dividend declared by the bank Accompanying the checks sent out today is the following and Frank Al derete were arrested by federal in connection with the alleged Huerta plot to launch a new revolu tion in Mexico This makes a total of six arrests on like charges since General Huerta was taken from a train at Newman N M Sunday and brought to El Paso with General Pas cual Orozco by United States officials Jose Zozaya another of the alleged Plotters was taken into custody late Tuesday Before the United States commissioner General bond was fixed at and the bonds of Frank and Ike Alderete at each The hearing has been set for Thursday morning Ike Alderete was formerly district clerk at El Paso county and is now engaged in the real estate business with his brother Frank Frank is former sanitary commissioner of El Paso A Shipment of 346 rifles and 46000 rounds of ammunition was located in the Mexican quarter Tuesday night according to a report received by the police It is believed that the ammu had been bought by agents of the Huerta junta here and was to have been used In was made to day as the result of a meeting held by the executive committee on the South side Tuesday evening Vari ous business men had pledged 375 for a celebration Three hundred dollars had been spent for fireworks The fireworks arrived from Chicago but were shipped back to the whole sale house this afternoon The opposition to saloon licenses is the reason for the action said Mayor this Many METS DEATH IN RIVER AT STEVENS POINT YESTERDAY MORNING The first drowning at Stevens Point his year occurred yesterday morning when Edward was seized with cramps while in bathing at the foot of Main street He with a party of companions were returning from a dance and decided to take a bath before going home was the first to plunge into the water The others saw that something was wrong and an attempt was made to rescue him but it was unsuccessful The body was recovered about an hour later The young man often went by the name of Kirsling the name of the people who adopted him He was 22 years old and an orphan Lockjaw Causes Death Elroy Wis July two year old son ot John died from lockjaw from stepping on a rusty nail blood poisoning setting In This morning Marshal Neal plead guilty to the charge of resisting an officer And dug down for 1610 the total of a ten dollar fine and costs Neal and a couple of other stone cutters hit the city on Tuesday coming from Ableman Yesterday gib strawberries this week Home berries of the best quality were on the market at the stores of some dealers as low as a case sixteen boxes yesterday That price was apparently the lowwater mark Today the leading stores quoted prices ranging from to a case After another day or two the berries that are will be softer lacking the firmness and the rich quality of those of the first part of the week The hot weather of the last few days ripened the berries rapidly and from now on the dealers expect a decline n the quality of the no de cline in price The raspberry crop in this section of the state is said to be a failure this year A great many bushes failed to sprout this spring on account of ad verse weather conditions of February and March are not due until next month but the prediction is made that red raspberries will be a very scarce commodity on the home market this season It is still too early in the season to get much of a line on blackberries and the same is true of the blueberry crop Nothing has been heard here to indicate anything out of the way with cither of these berries however and the dealers expect plenty of black berries and blueberries will be avail able when the time comes CIGARETTES FIFTEEN CIGARETTE LICENSES HAVE BEEN ISSUED BY CITY CLERK BROWN As a result of the new cigarette was passed bythe legisla ture this Rapids is 75 better off than it would have been if the law had not been passed In other words 15 local n cigarettes have taken out licenses permitting them to sell the same the fee in each case being Beginning today the dealers can sell cigarettes to adults but cannot sell them to minors SALOONS OPEN THIS MORNING TWENTYTWO SALOONS OPENED FOR BUSINESS HERE THIS MORN ING This morning twentytwo saloons opened up in this city to dp business under frig 1915 license This less thirst shop than the city had last year Two of the saloons are operated this year by proprietors Albert Kluge has taken over the place on Grand Avenue formerly conducted by Tom E J conducting August Miller year on Second street Miller having moved intp the building opposite Rowlands store at the east side market square TWO DEAD AND THREE BY GAS Murder Plot Suspected in Fort Wayne rf Port Wayne Ind July ready dead and three still scious with their recovery in doubt are the results of what ig believed to have been a deliberate plan to murder by the use of gas discovered when neighbors burst in the door of the home of Matt Gooley 1820 Weis ser Park avenue here The dead are aged fifty and his son Donald age ten The wife and two daughters Hazel age twentyone eighteen old are at local hos hovering between life and death Gooley was found dead on the floor of the kitchen at his home and gas was streaming from two burners In the range The other members of the family were in bed upstairs un conscious The police hastily rushed them to hospitals The boy died in an ambulance on the way The police say Gooley went home In an Intoxicated condition and It Is believed he planned to carry out re threats that he would kill him self and wipe out his family The odor of gas from the Gooley led neighbors to make the investigation which led to the discovery of the tragedy Dies at 102 Years of Age Wis July more than half a century spent on a farm her husband carved out of the wilder ness here Mrs Dorothy Ackermann a native of Germany Is dead at the age of 102 years
