Daily paper in Wood County FIRST YEAR NO 259 GRAND RAPIDS WIS TUESDAY MARCH 30 1915 TEN CENTS A WEEK ENGINEER BUTTRICK KILLED IN WRECK Former Resident Of This City Was Killed When His Engine Goes Into Ditch The following particulars regarding the tragic death of Frank Buttrick a brief account of which was publish ed in last nights Daily Leader is taken from the Green Bay Gazette Frank Buttrick of Green Bay engineer was killed outright and Thomas Dare of Green Bay a fire man was perhaps fatally injured Monday morning when an engine of a freight train on the Kewaunee Grcen Bay Western Railway went into a ditch one and company onehalf miles north of Forestville a station between Algoma and Sturgeon Bay Mr Buttrick was thrown from his engine as it left the rails and his body was found about four feet from the engine He was dead when picked up Both the engineers legs had been broken and his skull injured Mr Dare was scalded about th body and his head was cut Only one car of the train was de railed and the conductor Clarenc Richards of Green Bay and the tw brakemen were not hurt The engine left the track and it wa turned over in a ditch according t information received at the genera headquarters in this city Frank Buttrick the unfortunate en gineer was 50 years of age and th father of three children His unlime ly death is mourned by his wife tw daughters and one son His remain were brought to this city this after noon Dares burns and cuts wer dressed at Algoma and the ivill be given further treatment in here THE PASSOVER FEAST OBSERVED HEBREWS OF THIS CITY CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF THE PASS OVER The Jewish feast of the Passover be gan last night and will bo observed by the Jewish people of this city with the same ancient rites and ceremonies WILL BE THE ONE BIG EVENT BOWLING CONTEST TO BE PULLED OFF TOMORROW PROMISES TO BE SOME GAME The one big event of the bowling tournament now being held in this city will be pulled off on March 31st when the Jones Coal Heavers meet the of Wausau This is the Wausau team composed of Mr Jones The publish ed reports lately regarding this of bowlers from the lumberjack city seem to have been exaggerated It is claimed here that their average Is closer to the 100 mark than 169 as they claim Now in order to show his up and demonstrate to the public that they know very little about the game Burr Jones has gotten together what he thinks is a winning team He has christened them Jones Coal Heavers and on the night of March 31st his team will meet his relatives from Wausau the alleged bowlers and it promises to be the big show of the tournament The curtain will be rung up at 8 oclock and the cast is made up follows COAL HEAVERS ATTORNEYS WILL ORGANIZE TWENTY SIX ATTORNEYS IN COUNTY WILL ORGANIZE ASSOCIATION THIS WEEK the French govern ment for the establishment in this country of a French credit of mately It is expected in banking circles that a statement will le forthcoming the next twen hours The plans under which the credit is to be established here have been submitted to the state de at Washington and the other proper authorities there and are said to have received full approval The credit it ig understood will take the form of treasury bonds for one year to bear interest at the rate of 5 per cent It is expected that there will be a public offering of the French securities and that the trans WAS HELD LAST EVENING AND OFFICERS WERE SELECTED FOR ENSUING YEAR An exceedingly small number of enthusiasts were in attendance at th adjourned meeting held last evening to organize a boat club but this fac did not interfere with perfecting the organization The meeting was held in the vest side city hall with the temperature near the zero mark there being no fires in the place and it reminded one of organizing for winter sports in stead of summer pleasures The meeting was called to order by T A Taylor who briefly stated the object of the meeting and suggested that things be hurried as rapidly as possible on account of the chilly con dition of the room and the way things were rushed was due no doub to visions of lagrippe and which those in attendance wanted to escape The officers First Second Conduct and Individual Lin dow Manawa The above tells the tale of the first annual Central Wisconsin High School Tournament held in the Stev ens Point Normal gymnasium on Fri day and Saturday of last week says the Journal It was a bold stroke the Waupaca county teams had plan ned and the fact that they carried off three of the four awards shows well it was executed The victory of Weyauwega was quite in the line of expectations but the performance of the wee Wau paca youngsters was a knockout DOW to the dopesters Weyauwega got into the final by virtue of a 34 to 20 victory over Wausau in the concluding game of Saturday after noon while Waupaca fought its way into the championship struggle through its 29 to 25 victory over Stevens Point in the evenings first The contest was a fitting climax to the great two day meeting Weyauwega with a decided advantage so far as phy sical proportions were concerned was conceded the victory over the Waupaca midgets before the start of the game but those who witnessed the combat know how near all pre dictions came to being knocked out of shape That Weyauwega and Waupaca were fairly entitled to first and sec ond places is generally admitted The Weyauwega team was one of the biggest in the tournament but they played cleanly and with a genero s amount of skill Their team work was excellent for their size were exceptionally speedy
