161933 VOLUME 3 NUMBER 2 SENATE WILL CURTAIL TAX COLLECTIONS Auditor Smith Says Extra Work Has Been Given His Department and Then Appropriation Cut FIGURE Voted by Senate as Compared With hy House Drastic Cuts for Others State Auditor Forrest Smith yesterday said the appropria tion for his office passed by the senate con curtailment of tax collection activities during the next two years Chief among the proposed activi ties which Smith said would be ham because of the reduction is income tax collections Smith had planned an extensive campaign of delinquent income tax collections which he said promised to be fruit ful It will be necessary for this of fice to rearrange its plans Smith said and make provisions for op on a much reduced although the legislature has given us considerable more du es to perform Although the senate reduced the appropriation item from which was the same figure as for 193132 to for 193334 the legislature has given us extra work to do that will cost between and forthe biennium Under a passed by the pres ent legislature and now a law the work of making county audits was taken from the counties and placed with the state auditors office Pro vision is made for ten auditors at a year each and as traveling expenses will run approximately 000 a year for each This new work of is going to require considerable cur funds No additional appropria tion was made for this work Drastic Slashes When the senate had finished amending the house appropriation it had reduced the amount the should receive from the gen revenue fund from to increased the amount from the Founded the Mace Tile and Monu ment Plant Frank Joseph Vetter 63 native resident of this city and former local business man died at oclock yesterday after a lingering illness at his home in El Paso Texas according to word received by rela tives Mr Vetter had been in failing health for the last 15 years He left here 14 years ago with his family for Texas in search of climatic con ditions more favorable to his health He was born and reared in this city where he spent the major por ion of his life Mr Vetter founded he firm on west Main Street now known as the Mace Tile Monu ment Company He engaged in the monument business here for a long period of time Surviving are his widow who was Kate of this city before her marriage seven children Lawrence Vetter of Ft Worth Texas Otto Walter Luke Tom and Miss Inez Vetter and Mrs Herman Eveler all of El Paso four brothers Henry Andrew and Ben Vetter of Jeffer son City and Peter Vetter of St Louis two sisters Mrs Josephine Weber and Mrs Nora Schepker al so of this place Mr Vetter was a son of Peter Vetter who died in 1873 His moth er Mrs Caroline Weber died here March 20 1933 at the age of 96 years While a resident here Mr Vetter was a member of the local Knights of Columbus organization St Pe ters Benevolent Society and of the Modern Woodmen of America Funeral services will be held Mon day at the Catholic cathedral in El Paso and burial will be at that place WF MCDANIEL DIESIN UNN Heart Attack Fatal to Life Long Resident of Osage Co William Frank McDaniel 65 died suddenly at oclock Fri day night at his home in Linn Mo of a heart attack Mr McDaniel was a native rsi dent of Osage county and had lived on a farm near Linn nearly all his life Six years ago he moved to the Osage county seat to make his home He was a farmer and car penter His widow nee Angie Moore fund from to three sons Dorsey McDaniel of reduced the amount Maywood Calif Jesse McDaniel of Crystal City Mo tnd Fred Mc Daniel of Linn and a daughter Mrs Independent Dealers Are to Furnish Him With Suf Evidence Periodic and frequent price sutting particularly of gaso line by large oil companies operating in Missouri was re ported to the house yester day by a special committee The report prepared by Rep O K Armstrong R Greene county chairman of the committee and signed by its other four members says numerous instances of such price cutting with resultant unfair competition have been brought to our attention The committee appointed early in he sesson held several hearings at which independent oil and gasoline dealers from over the state testi fied The other members of the are Representatives Eu jne Damon of Jackson county Roy of Marion county E W of Pettis county and Bay less James of Buchanan county The practice on the part of sev eral large companies seems to be of selecting a specific and lim territory within the state and dropping retail prices on gasoline n that area two or three cents on he gallon the report says Hurls Independents Unless the independent dealers meet the lowered prices they lose much of their trade the report continues If they do unfair esthey then are forced to sell their product at a loss Such practices the report says are obviously in violation of our state laws against pools trusts con and discrimination and if proved in court are punishable by fine and imprisonment We feel that the attorney gen of the state is clothed with sufficient authority to proceed again st such unfair competition and dis in prices The attorn ey general has assured us that he stands ready to assist
