Daily Advocate (Newspaper) - July 22, 1916, Victoria, Texas Weather Report Tonight and Sunday unsettled light variable winds FREE TICKET TO NATATORIUM wax with Knowlan Supply Co VICTORIA TEXAS VOLUME is VICTORIA TEXAS SATURDAY AFTERNOON JULY V3 1916 NUMBER 86 FARMERS COTTON PLAN IN DANGER REPORT THAT BUYERS ARE CONTRACTING FOR COTTON IN FIELD CREATES ALARM Considerable alarm was created here today among farmers this county interested iu cooperative marketing of cotton byj the report that buyers are contracting for cotton in the field at 13 cents per Sound This practice if generally followed would greatly interfere with their plans and they are closely investi gating the report They will address letters to all the cot ton growers in the county advising them against selling in the sold in would also prove j injurious to the merchants and they too will advise against such methods It has developed that several days ago a buyer offered loj contract with a tenant farmer on one of the large plantations in the Anaqua section of this county for his cotton in the field at 13 cents a pound The farmer consulted his landlord about it he was advised not to make such a sale This shows that j there is some basis for the report Buying crops in the field is a method often resorted to by buyers to prevent cooperation among farmers in the marketing i of their products and is said to have been practiced against citrus fruit growers of California the tobacco growers of tucky and the cabbage growers of Corpus Christi A prominent merchant of Victoria who is well informed on the cotton situa tion is of the opinion that cotton oil mill interests are resorting to the practice reported in this county However others think that buyers for certain foreign countries have adopted the method to be assured of a sufficient supply of cotton before an anticipated advance in the price ll S TO IS TO CLEAN SHOOTS FOUR PERSONS MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS
