Coshocton Tribune, The (Newspaper) - November 18, 1967, Coshocton, Ohio The President Can't Win These Days By MERRIMAN SMITH WASHINGTON at the White A veteran Washingtonian who distributes one of the more authentic private newsletters is toying with what he regards as an admittedly dangerous idea A Mend suggested that to test public opinion he include in his next newsletter a simple sentence unrelated to the main content of the Lyndon Johnson cannot be all bad The newsletter man says he is not lacking in courage but he does not have secretarial help sufficient to handle the load of mail which he feels certain would result from the statement about the president Another Washingtonian a journalist who gets about the country frequently on ing dates had a similar idea recently and decided to test it for reaction by a somewhat sophisticated lecture audience During the course of his talk he mentioned the so-called credibility gap endured by the Johnson administration and offered this Just because a statement is made by President Johnson Secretary of State Dean Rusk or Defense Secretary Robert ara does not insure the antiseptic accuracy or essential truth of the statement The speaker looked over his large audience carefully and without any doubt in his mind saw a number of heads nodding in ment Then be But by the same token and as a matter of simple logic just because something is said by Messrs Johnson Rusk or McNamara does not mean that it is an automatic falsehood or deliberate distortion This man swears that the people who are nodding moments before turned to ing and shaking their heads in what he could only surmise was disagreement displeasure or disbelief This column which is distributed to newspapers twice a week by UPI has encountered much the same sort of reaction by mail drawing some indescribably dirty letters simply because of theoretically humorous anecdotes involving the President or some member of his family Such anecdotal material is presented as it has been since Backstairs at the White House began during the Eisenhower in 1953 to show the incumbent Chief Executive in something more than a starchy strictly official dimension The current mood of some Americans however is so angrily one-sided that to relate anything uncritical about the current President drives these people into spasms of illogical fury A laboratory not long ago this column carried an item about how Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass livened up a White House social affair when these famous musicians entertained after a formal state dinner Several letters arrived at the White House press room shortly after the column ed denouncing the writer for slyly ing to cast the Johnsonian image in a light favorable to younger America Your clever sugar-coating about Herb Alpert won't said one postcard LBJ is still the enemy in Vietnam As if the Tijuana Brass had the connection with the war other than paying a walloping income tax This is something more than political opposition It's nutty PAPER CALL TRIBUNE BY The Coshocton Tribune CALLING DIAL VOL 58 NO 86 COSHOCTON OHIO 43812 SATURDAY EVENING NOVEMBER 18 1967 7 CENTS The Army Goofed r T Along with its major problems Vietnam the U S Army Has smaller ones inch as what to do with PFC Joe Smith the misplaced GI Here PFC Smith who isn't really ready for retirement but would like to be out of the Army makes ready for some reading at the post library in the Presidio of Sai spent 18 months of his Army career at a civilian soldier watting for orders that never came The story of Smith in the Army is the perfect tale of a classic military snafu UPI Telephoto LBJ Warns Hanoi On Policy Reassures Worried Americans By NICHOLAS DANILOFF WASHINGTON Johnson's latest warning to Hanoi not to misjudge the U.S resolve in Vietnam also carried with it words of reassurance to the American people The President's remarks at Friday's White House news conference appeared to be largely aimed at the rising number of Americans who have become increasingly frustrated by a seemingly endless war thousands of miles from U S shores Both Johnson and Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker the U.S envoy in Saigon stressed in separate talks that the United Slates is making steady progress in Vietnam even though most of it isn't dramatic The President in his replies to newsmen and Bunker in an address to the Overseas Press Club in New York sought to get across satisfaction with the way things are progressing even though peace may still be a long way off But it was noticeable that neither Johnson nor Bunker raised any hopes in diplomatic quarters for a Vietnam settlement Communist diplomats in Washington ed the opinion that the President's address essentially offered nothing new and was primarily aimed at buoying the spirits of the American public Some diplomats even expressed concern that the Johnson administration is slowly moving toward bringing even greater sure on North Vietnam perhaps by ing Haiphong's piers and docks from the list of off limits targets Ohio Mostly cloudy Saturday with a chance of showers changing to snow flurries afternoon or through mainland China Given Respite From War By DANIEL SOUTHERLAND SAIGON Viet Cong 13 days of truce for Christmas New Year's and the Asian lunar New Year in the Vietnam war There were signs the Allies might agree The guerrillas clandestine radio said the Viet Cong would honor a suspension of military attacks for three days at mas three days at New Year's and seven days during the Asian lunar new year Tet holiday It gave no indication of a Communist desire for a longer war pause or for peace talks v President Nguyen Van Thieu of South Vietnam last Saturday said he believed the allies would observe holiday truces this season There was no official truce announcement from U.S headquarters But it was assumed here American officials would agree and also halt bombing of North Vietnam during truce periods Many U.S commanders have voiced strong criticism of such truces They cite nist violations of past truces when the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese made attacks and seized new positions A bombing pause however short would give North Vietnam a breathing space to repair damage done in daily U.S raids they believe The U.S position would have to come from the White House The Communists like Thieu before them cited humanitarian reasons for having a truce The Viet Cong used similar phrasing in gaining past pauses However there was little doubt such appeals would find support in many quarters particularly those opposed to continued fighting U.S Cannons Halt Cong 500 Man Force Shattered SAIGON troops in the Mekong Delta today lowered their cannon barrels and blew apart a charging horde of about 500 Viet Cong at only 25 yards American spokesmen said the GIs killed at least 102 Communists who mounted the suicide charge in an attempt to cripple U.S drive through the rice paddies
