REMINISCENCES OF COSHOCTON Notes and Notions of Time Incidents STORIES OE OLDEN TIME Some Things About the Doctors of Coshocton in Earlier and Later IDays By Rev Win E Hunt Coshocton has never lacked for Every orthodox and heterodox every line of practice lopatic Hydropathic Eclectic Homeopathic and Osteopathic has had tives at one time or another in the place Many of these abided only a short time some spent the best part of a life-time In few parts of the country has practice been more and trying than hereabouts The town has never afforded an ly city practice Even yet the toil and exposure of the country er can hardly be estimated The scattered population in the earlier days and the bad roads necessitated rides and the baize leggins and pill bags and the pine knot or rated tin lanterns with the tallow dip inside the sturdy saddle horse and the old chaise or sulky were well known parts of the outfit necessary Drugs were in crude form ments were 1 once saw after I came to Coshocton an enema ad- ministered to a small child with a great ten inch lonar pewter syringe and I have been told that when an arm was amputated in 1847 a saw brought from one of the butcher shops was used The skill and of the Doctor were often ly tested to make effective household and domestic remedies in the way of herbs and com poultices and nipple drawing bottles Any body that has large knowledge of or looked over the account books of an old Doctor knows that all tae McClures Aid not live in a good portion of ipecac and told when the husband brought a jug home with him to put a certain tity of the ipecac in it and await re- sults Of course he had an upheaval and swore roundly at the whisky A few days later some relatives came to the house while the family was away and cold and hungry both the man and woman took a good pull at the it in very many homes in those times esteemed the sum of all com- fort The visitors soon got back home in very bad condition and Dr Lee was sent for He soon diagnosed the case gave some remedies very mysteriously compounded but kept his own counsel The owner of the jug was in a very kind way by his wife who told him he knew the whisky was the best made in the whole country and that she feared he had overtaxed his stomach in the long years of drinking he would have to The bad stuff was poured out on the ground just before starting to town and the jug was brought in and ordered to be filled with something good Upon arriving at home the woman fixed the jug again and the man tried it with the other time result The conclusion was after a time reached that his wife was right and the whisky was given up f good An old time ey cure About the time of my advent the old Doctor had been greatly troubled by boys stealing apples from trees on his lot on S east corner of Fourth and Main streets They not only took his apples and broke down his trees but left open his garden gates and cattle and swine then ran at large in the streets Plugging a goodly number of apples a quantity of the nauseating stuff was placed in them and for a few days the doctors were hard run to look after sick boys But the remedy for the stealing was effective and the practice ceased extended Bi- of Dr Lee is given in Young Dr Lee as he was called was in in ana and although he returned a year or so later never practiced much de- voting his later years to keeping a drug store next THEY SAY That it a pretty tolerable clean sweep Despite tae reputation attempted be given to it the region about hocton was never very unhealthy Considering the hard labours and ex- necessary diet of a new country there was not any great amount of sickness In very early davs there was a scourge cold plague some sav congestive fever ing the rich valley In the fifties Keene had a visitation of the cholera At the close of the war Coshocton had a number of cases of unmistakable Of late years there have been several epi- demics in way of typhoid fever and scarlet tever but the average health conditions of this region have been quite good I heard soon after coming to shocton of a physician who was called in to see a boy who had eaten freely of dried beef not masticating it very well and afterwards had thrown it up The Doctor was not told the facts by the boy Upon examination he very gravely informed the boy's father that it was a very bad case and the chances for improvement very slim as it looked as though the boy's liver was disintegrating and was being thrown off the stomach There was talk too of another Doctor who ing sent for some vaccine ter received the scab imbedded after the manner of the time in some white wax and removing only the tin foil began at once to use the stuff and before a brother physician called his attention to the matter several score of people The old gags about pills were in free circulation Not very long since a Doctor told me he was a bouse in the country to which Ibe had some weeks before been called to see a woman for whose relief he had left a number of packages of of Soda Subsequently a Homeopathic Doctor was called in and he left a little vial of sugar pills as the woman called them the husband out in the yard tbe first Doctor when passing as above noted made friendly inquiry The woman herself promptly stepped on to the porch and insisted on the tor coming in and taking dinner ing him lhat she -had just made an pie having used the powders he had left her to shorten or raise the crust and the little pills the other Doctor had left her to witn I am the son of a man who after graduating in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania practiced forty odd years in a small town in southern New Jersey and have always had much sympathy with Doctors and while they do not know everything or work miracles I firmly believe that as a class there are no more earnest benevolent and self-sacrificing living My edge of and experience with the tors of this locality sustains me in my estimate I came to Coshocton nearly half a century ago old Doctor Lee feeble with age and crippled rheumatism had about up He still had a great deal of confidence in Ipecac A woman it is said once you had better pay your bets before forgetting about it That W A Smith is as serene un- der defeat as he is sensible at all times That the Republicans are not much in it when the city of Coshocton elects officers That Rule Jones may be without a party but he gets the votes all the same That the editor of the daily Age has at last found out mayor position as to slot That nine out of ten Republican nominees at the late city election came out in the also That the Republicans this April did not expend as much in the campaign as they did one year ago and with dividends about the same That George A Hay has been in Cleveland this week having a ence with Senator that George wants some good official position and will probably get it- That Billy the Kid and Sonny tae Bootblack have severed their tion with the editorial department of the Coshocton Age on account of in- ability to collect pay from Age company for late campaign Taat something to eat when you're hungry and to drink
