Democrat And Standard, The (Newspaper) - June 6, 1902, Coshocton, Ohio v and DEMOCRAT COSHOCTON OHIO FRIDAY JUNE New Series Volume j No 44 NAPLES The Old City Putting On New World Airs Or Gives An Entertaining count of His Visit to Famous Mount Vesuvius Our last letter left Dr Finley at Naples Italy from which city he wrote as arriving in Naples I could not help noticing the great changes that have taken place in the way of modern improvement in the center have a large arai chair fastened upon two long poles and four and times two guides a tourist up in that way But by taking a little time stopping a moment or two every few steps one can walk up without much fatigue or 1 have had the experience of walking upon this the side and also of ing from Pompeii by horseback about two-thirds of the distance up the mountain and of then walking and being the remainder of the distance up to the crater That was the manner in which I made my wav up to the crater upon the sion of my first visit but I think that to drive up part way and then take the funicular railway is a very much better easier and more pleasant way Just as I was about to start upon mv return from the crater a few POINTED PARAGRAPHS BOARD OF REVIEW Which Briefly and Appointed For Coshocton ly Tell the Story large pieces of red vomited forth from hot lava were the volcano dropping near us and the Italian guides ran and separated the hot mass into small pieces and for a few of the old old Ancient times copuer coins I secured some ings have stood no doubt for centuries are being torn down and the debris and rubbish all removed to fill up new space inside the wall of the harbor The ground is being smoothly and laid out in fine wide streets all paved good and solid with large blocks of lava brought down from and fine large modern ing business blocks and hotels are be- ing erected Thus a part at least of the old city of Naples is fast ing modernized and looks very The great arcade in the center of the modern part of the city is the largest and most beautiful one I have ever been in It is built something in the form of the Greek cross and is a great variety of all kinds of store rooms within for the display and sale of all varieties of novelties also all kinds of and fancy articles drv goods etc There appear to be a large hotels being built and judging from the large number of tourists visiting Naples they are needed and be occupied is one thing about the street system of Naples which I think is specimens of genuine lava up to that time the latest out to bring home with me as souvenirs and re- minders of my visit to historic grim old Vesuvius DISTINGUISHED VISITORS Ohio Canal Commission Spends Night in Coshocton Of Local Happenings Together With Items of General Interest For Hasty our cities at home that is the street car tracks are placed as near as possible to the paved sidewalks and when getting or out of arcar vou simply step from the sidewalk to the car or vice versa and do not have to walk out into the street is a great deal of business doing in Naples both in tion to the interior by railway aind shipping from tne harbor which is of the finest and best the Mediterranean sea coast There are places in and Naples to ana visited There are the drives to the tops the beautiful villas to be seen also the grand views to be had of the city and harbor and away the smoke and steam pouring forth continually In mv visit to Mount Vesuvius I was somewhat disappointed in that I did not get as good and beau- a view of the city country bor and sea from its summit on count of the heavy clouds that clung around the mountain as I did upon the occasion of my former visit en or twelve years ago Neither did I have as good and interesting a view down into the interior of the crater At that time I could and did work all around the outer edge of the great crater and had a good look down which will probably have much to do with deciding whether the state will retain or abandon the canals Superintendent Geidel met the com- missioners at Dresden and them to Roscoe and this and They inspected the water supply and witnessed its uses at Roscoe on and left for Newcomerstown from which place accompanied by W G Johnston of Akron they departed for The mission of the party is an im- portant one as upon their report probably hinges the fate of the The report
