against apparent frontrunner Robert Strauss before the issue is decided Satur day The committee is expected to vote Saturday on a motion to oust incumbent Chairman Jean Westwood who has been under fire to quit since Sen George McGovern who handpicked her for the job was trounced in the Nov 7 presidential election George Mitchell one of the darkhorse contenders for the job said Friday night some kind of compromise candidate would emerge before a vote is taken on a new chairman At the same time an agenda was announced for Saturdays meeting which provides for a recess between the anticipated vote to depose Mrs Westwood and any vote on a replacement This would allow the candidates time to organize a front to oppose him However a Strauss strategist said Friday night the Strauss group would try to couple immediate election of a replacement with its removal motion Mrs Westwood said the agenda which includes time to entertain an ouster motion not i n c 1 u d e d in schedules was approved unanimously by the executive committee which met through the day Friday Mitchell said there were no specific plans for the Strauss challengers to choose one of their number to face him in single combat but he said he expected them to talk Friday night Strauss is a first cousin of Mrs S R Alexander 133 Alta Plaza Her mother Mrs Louis Rosenwasser 1001 Carmel and Strauss Mrs Alexander said last night she hadnt talked to Strauss in several days although she tried to contact him this week to talk about his possible selection to head the Democratic party Its going to happen anyway said Mitchell Maine national committeeman and former booster of Edmund Muskies presidential campaign The field is going to be narrowed down voluntarily or oth Earlier Friday Mrs Westwood made her strongest attack to date against Strauss a former national er calling him a symbol of Democrats for Nixon Strauss insisted he is a and that Mrs Westwood handpicked for the chairmanship by George McGovern should step aside in favor of new directions following McGoverns landslide loss to President Nixon in the Nov 7 election Bob Strauss was a good treasurer Mrs Westwood told reporters But he is nonetheless very widely considered as a symbol I suppose of Democrats for Nixon people who did not support the up after the launching Thursday Mission Control officials noted there are 12 latches in the system and only three or four are needed for a secure hookup But experts on the ground were curious about the malfunction and planned to it During the lengthy check Ceman and Schmitt had little to say as they vehicle Ceman and Schmitt in late afternoon removed hatches and slipped through a tunnel connecting the two ships They carried with them film magazines tools and other items theyll use on the lunar to determine how fluids behave in weightlessness The informa tion recorded on film will be studied on Earth in an effort to set guidelines for future space science experiments and for possible space manufacturing techniques There are a lot of big bubbles boiling up Evans reported at one point Its a pretty picture The astronauts conducted the flawless engine firing earlier Friday when they were 147000 miles from earth The burst steered them off a collision course with the moon and onto a path that will take them to an orbit within 70 miles of the lunar surface Sunday Ohhh there we go said Evans the command ships systems expert as the engine lit up Burn is on time and we got shut down said Cernan the Apollo 17 commander The astronauts earlier had dumped waste water and urine overboard and it froze into tiny particles in the frigid space environment With the sun reflecting off their icy surfaces they resembled flickering fireflies as they floated in front of the spaceship After the firing Cernan reported We just caught up with everyone of those little bitty particles Were right in the middle of them Theyre drifting in random fashion Some are going against us some away from us he said Weve really got a star field out there It was a first for the Apollo program The rocket firing removed one of the continuing effects of the delayed launch of Apollo 17 on Thursday when it got away from Cape Kennedy 2 hours and 40 minutes late because of a computer problem To make up for lost Time and to get the astronauts to the moon on the original timeline Mission Control had them rocket
