will have to hold a county convention to who their county sheriff candidate will be Myers and Miller each topped the Afield in their respective parties during balloting here Tuesday Myers outdistanced challenger San dra Holliday 303265 earning 49 per jent of the vote Miller with 350 votes won over and Seaton who garnered 216 and 147 votes respectively The sheriffs candidate for the will go to convention because Brad Albee who resigned that position just recently earned the most votes over Bud Herring and Larry Drew Albee 198 votes Bud Herring 144 and Larry Drew 140 P iO Since Albee too late to have his name removed from the ballot the Republicans must now hold a county convention to name their choice to face Democrat Gene in the November General Elec tion was unopposed on the Democratic ticket in the primary and was given 490 votes of confidence Th Republicans can nominate either of the candidates or can choose anyone else they feel would be qualified as a suitable challenger to Dixon Earlier in the day the Adams County Board of Supervisors named Drew aa officer with the Coming police Department to replace Albee un til the November election In the only other county race supervisor Don Wolf challenger Jim Kimpson ia the fourth district supervisor race 5648 The race for recorder was close as many political observers had predic ted Myers a longtime Corning resident won in eight townships and Lenox pilot still critical okay man said his lower was Herman Joseph Herm Schweers 32 Route 2 Lenox remains in very critical condition at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln Neb after the I spray plane he was piloting crashed about Thursday afternoon at the north end of the Lenox airport run way Schweers suffered second and third degree burns over 86 percent of his body a combination of his chemical burns from the insecticide his plane was carrying and from fire after his aircraft exploded A family spokes man said his lower body was burned with the chemicals and his upper body by the fire He also received lung damage from both Adams County Deputy Sheriff Bud Herring said Monday the Federal Aviation Administration has com its preliminary investigation determining that pilot error is the probable cause Herring said heavy air conditions and tall grass on the runway in com bination with at least 80 gallons of insecticide and a full load of fuel Colonial Manor fined for health violations Tha State Department of Health has fined Colonial Manor Nursing Home for violation of a long list of infractions including resident care resident appearance and spect for residents by members of the staff As a result of the problems and fines Gene Mott administrator there only since November resigned his position effective Tuesday May 27 In a statement issued Monday by Stan Vanderwoude regional manager for Beverly Enterprises it was an that BUI Robinson of Creston will be the administrator Beverly owns Colonial Manor and several other homes in the country Robinson with 10 years experi ence as administrator of the Creston Colonial Manor will menage both facilities A spokesman for the Department of Health said the fine resulted from a combination not all were found to have the same problems A partial list of the violations is as follows a complete list will be published next week Some residents had bed sores skin ulcers cellulitis reddened and raw areas on the upper thighs genital and rectal areas Some residents were in need of care regarding problems with ex cretion and urination in their beds Floors in at least one room were found to be production of Icaria will go on sale today Thursday at 9 am at First Federal Savings and Loan in Coming example but residents were not helped with eating for up to 25 minutes was no prompt response to call lights by staff members In some cases residents had to wait from one half hour to three hours for help from staff Some residents did not receive proper assistance with their general appearance This included food on clothing stained hospital gowns flaking of and eyebrows red cheeks and chins razor burns food on faces and mouths greasy faces and hair were some instances of im proper care after surgery where residents were not given proper or were not moved properly in their beds staff were not always kind and considerate to the residents Some used gruff voices in response to resident requests and in one case a resident caught a finger in a wheelchair and staff members laughed The State Department said it plans to make another inspection of the facility to determine if efforts are being made to correct the violations Vanderwoude issued this state ment in response to the Health De actions Colonial Manor is proud of its past reputation for providing high quality care to residents We are diligently reviewing recent reports identifying alleged areas of concern and will make any changes necessary to assure that residents receive com passionate care from competent staff We appreciate the trust the com munity has shown in Colonial Manor and axe confident that the problems identified can be corrected quickly prevented Schweers from gaining the necessary takeoff speed Realizing he was in trouble Schweers apparently reached down to dump his load of chemicals but instead grabbed the planes flaps lever pushing the plane downward The planes right wing hit one fence post and then another at the end of the runway in Taylor County Either the wheels or the landing gear then hit the fence which divides Taylor and Adams plane hit once bounced hit again with the propeller digging into the ground several times As the force of the cident catapulted the plane around it struck the burst into flames and slid feet before coming to rest in flames against another fenceon the Shorty Brown property in Adams County Witnesses said Schweers climbed from the plane and walked to the highway Iowa 49 where his assistant Don Black had raced to meet him The Lenox Ambulance and Fire Department were called Schweers was taken to Greater Community Hospital in Creston and was later transferred to the burn cen ter at Saiat Elizabeths FAA officials arrived on the scene about 10 aon Friday to begin their investigation Schweers and his wife Martia have three children all of preschool age Area fanners were to begin plant ing the crops Tuesday His Kenny Stephens approved the 43 percent increase in salaries and benefits Tuesday noon during a special board meeting and the Cor ning Education Association gave its stamp of approval hist week V the long wait was Drew Bud Herring chief deputy for the sheriffs depar and Gene Dixon the Democratic candidate were inter viewed Tuesday for the position It took four motions to deter mine an appointee The first motion to appoint Drew died for a lack of a second the second motion nominated Dixon to serve but was defeated 23 on the third motion Herring was appointed as the nominee but that motion died for a lack of a ments in two municipally operated facilities A contract with H Gene McKeown and Associates Red Oak was signed involving improvements at the municipal airport Council members are moving ahead with plans to revamp the airport including relocation of the terminal building runway apron and hangars The federal government haa provided some matching grant funds for initial work at the airport and the contract with the engineers will provide a basic design Council members also accepted a 817996 grant from the Iowa Conser vation Commission for use hi com renovation of the swimming pool Work will be done next fall after the pool closes for the season A grant of similar amount waa matched last spring for ments In other business the Council Approved a request Larry Archer that his property taxes be suspended or remitted because of a physical disability The final decision rests with the Adams County Board of Supervisors which must take up the same request Heard a request fay Mike Yearington street superintendent that he be allowed to use money in this years budget for asphalt re surfacing of about 400 feet of Rosary Drive south of Rosary Hospital The board of supervisors has indicated it will share in the cost since some of the street is adjacent to property in the county Gave City Attorney Stu Nielsen permission to legal proceedings against property owners who have failed to keep
