Superintendent Ken Mallas Named to fill the junior high science head football head boys track and assistant boys baseball positions is former Corning resident Dennis Redel 32 Tracy Hook a former Creston resident has been chosen to fill the industrial arts assistant boys football head boys basketball and assistant track positions Redel is a 1972 graduate of Cor ning Community High School He graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids with a bachelor of arts degree in physical education in 1976 with minors in earth science physical science and biology Since 1979 he has been a junior high science teacher at Dunlap He has been head football coach in Dunlap during that time and won conference in 1982 and 1985 and compiled a 3825 won loss record Redel also has been head boys track coach at Dunlap since 1979 His track team won the position at the 1982 state track meet and he was chosen District Track Coach of the Year for Class 1A Before teaching and coaching at Dunlap he taught biology and was an assistant football coach for two years in the Muscatine Community Schools Hook a Creston High School graduate received a bachelor of arts degree in industrial arts in 1982 from William Penn College with special emphasis in woodworking and carpentry He has taught at Dunlap the past four years and was an assistant to Redel in football and an assistant in boys basketball Hook will replace Paul Schmitz in industrial arts and Percy Stielow as head boys basketball Redel will replace Chip Capaldo in junior high science and head football and Paul Schmitz as head boys track Wind dation approved bylaws and articles of incorporation April 24 Purpose of the foundation is to receive and ad minister property for charitable pur poses for the benefit of the com munity Organizers said the foundation is yet another step inComings effort to remain progressive The foun dation provides a collection point for property to the community The foundation was created because it has become increasingly apparent that an organization ia needed to accommodate worthy causes and to provide a place for per sons to donate funds in trust for the good of the community commented Jim Whitmore one of the founders The foundation will work through a board of directors composed of seven representatives of community groups These will serve without pay and will share in the responsibility of deciding how any bequests will be spent Gifts may be donated in several ways General These would be the most useful since they make it possible for the foundation to take note of changing needs and to assist with emergencies Special Fields These would in clude gifts for special interest such as cultural humanitarian recreational civic agricultural and educational Anything of intrinsic value could be the subject of a gift according to Whitmore This could include real estate stocks bonds debentures cash and life insurance etc However gifts of any size can be made and will be put to work ef to meet specific needs Memorial funds also will je Generally donors may obtain favorable income estate tax treatment for gifts and bequests Tax laws constantly change so those interested in contributing to the foundation should consult their attorneys or tax advisors who will be able to help Whitmore recommen ded The bequests could be used for any charitable purposes within the Corning Community School District boundaries according to the articles of incorporation Work on the foundation began about a year ago Original incor were Don Williams Alec Turner and Austin Turner Stu Nielsen local attorney provided legal guidance The foun dation has obtained a business cer from the Iowa Secretary of State and has filed for status Board members will represent seven groups as follows Corning City Council Adams County Ministerial Association Adams County Board of Supervisors Cor ning Board of Education Corning Library Board of Trustees Corning Chamber of Commerce and In depository for the foun dation Donations bequests etc are being accepted now Brad and Thelma 120 years of service to community banking A rarity in the banking community will be noted on Monday May 12 with recognition for 60 years of service to two members of the Okey Vernon First National Bank Thelma Heitsman and Brad both began their banking careers in 1926 and will be feted at special open houses Brad from 9 am to noon in Prescott and Thelma from noon to 3 pm in Corning Few banks can claim one per son with six decades of service commented Board Chairman Floyd Were proud to have two with made to area farm ers for the 1985 feed grain program according to Rex Rinker Adams County executive director Advance payments completed in the fall of 1984 and early 1985 reached a figure of million and the final payments just concluded totaled million Participating farms had a total of 81185 acres of corn base enrolled in the 1985 program A maximum of 48 cents per bushel was paid For the 1986 effect Oct 1 1986 or as soon as the crop is harvested this fall whichever is sooner Adams County USDA agencies are assessing damage from last weeks locally heavy rain Farmers who experienced losses of crop or livestock or damage to conservation structures are asked to report the extent of damage and estimated costs of repair to the office as soon as possible Board discusses heat control The Adams County Board of Supervisors Friday met with representatives of Honeywell to discuss methods of providing better heat control at Country Haven for merly the county care facility Ray S Turkic operations super visor and Ray Thompson main tenance supervisor recommended addition of thermostats in certain parts of the building in addition to other alterations The board will discuss the issue and possible cost sharing with of of Country Haven Corp before taking any action Possible revision of the maintenance agreement with Honeywell also was discussed The possibility of securing a private firm to conduct the annual Adams County audit was discussed with Lester Bascom an accountant with Draper and Mikkelsen and Co PC of Creston In the past the annual audits have been conducted by the State of Iowa Some counties in other parts of Iowa have switched to private auditing firms in recent years for economic reasons The board will check further into such a change County Engineer Eldon Rike
