Chambers annual Christmas retail Some stores opened Sunday afternoon but only a few brave shop ventured into the subzero weather Corning officially recorded eight inches of snow which was whipped by northwest winds of up to 40 miles per hour Some reports had wind chill temperatures between 40 and 50 below zero Only emergen cy and necessary travel were advised fay aty county and state law en night were recorded at 15 below zero with highs around 7 degrees Sunday The official low Sunday night was 7 below The wind was more of a problem than the snow for road crews who put iri dozens of hours of overtime to keep streets highways and roads at least passable Dick Scott engineer with the Adams County engineers office and head of the countys road crew said Monday that all county roads were at least midday Crews worked late Sunday and began about 4 am Monday in hopes of getting ahead of drifts Five county truck nine maintainers were used to keep roads passable said a bulldozer was needed near in the northeast part of the county to open one road that the countys could not Employees of the citys Street Department also put in extra hours fighting the wind and drifts Most of the 35 Rural Electric Cooperative said a few residents in the Carl area were without electricity about 90 minutes Sunday when the wind downed a line A line also was down for a short while Sun day Drifting snow prevented crews from reaching the downed line near Carl and one worker had to walk the line in to find the break The city was even more fortunate Dean Davis municipal utilities manager agreed with Roberts in saying a lack of ice and freezing rain kept the situation from getting We didnt have any problems Things went well he said Wind is generally not a problem until it is coupled with ice
