Corning Three persons are seeking the two currently held by Ruth Henderson and Dale Car Mrs Henderson is stepping down after 10 years of service to her community while Cannichael is seeking election to a position filled by Council appointment seven months ago Also seeking one of the positions are Kathy Schafer and Estella Verlyne Westphal is challenging Second Ward Council member Jim Shaw for that position Running unopposed in Ward I is incumbent Marvin Steffen and seeking reelection in Ward 3 is Shelley Robertson Incumbent Mayor Lee Elliott is unopposed for reelection Voters also will be asked to im a proposition changing Council and mayoral terms from two years to four years also known as the staggered term form of election The proposal reads Shall the proposition to change the term of of fice of the Councilmen of Corning Iowa from a 2year to a 4year term be adopted At Prescott Dennis L Hogan and James E Geary are the candidates for mayor Seeking the five Council positions are Corning Board of Education last week proposed to the districts teachers an increase in base salary of about 1 percent some changes in the master contract language and also responded to proposals made by the teachers at the opening negotiations session the week before The boards initial salary proposal calls for an increase in base wages for a starting teacher of to This represents slightly less than a 1 percent hike in salaries The board this year represented by head negotiator Fred Shearer junior high principal also offered increments ranging from for a bachelor of arts degree to for a master of arts degree plus 15 hours toward a doctorate total package would cost Che boards proposals came daring the second negotiations session be tween the two sides regarding the 196687 contract year Teachers made their proposals during the first session Oct 17 The board responded Oct 24 A list of five contract changes was laid on the table for consideration by the teachers and board as the negotiations go behind closed doors this week If no agreement is reached by Nov 15 negotiations automatically reach impasse and a mediator is called in The boards proposed language changes include the following in the definition of that adds band vocal music and special education to regular classroom teachers These had not been included there previously require that credits earn ed by teachers munity Building for the first annual Ducks Unlimited Banquet Nov 14 A Sunday sales permit for the Legion also was approved Legion members provided financial data showing that at least onehalf of their business done there on Sundays is from the sale of food In other business the Council Informed a representative of Colonial Manor Nursing Home that a private individual owns the west end of Northgate Drive CM had ap the Council about sharing the cost of having a portion of North gate resurfaced but the Council ex it does not own all of the road Heard a complaint that a flashing arrow sign at Ninth and Iowa 148 is obstructing a proper view of traffic The Police Department will ask the owners to move the sign east a few feet down a request by the Iowa League of Municipalities for money to help support formation of a committee to hire a consultant to in alternatives to skyrocket ing liability insurance Heard a complaint about an abandoned vehicle on the Olin Strait property Council members said the matter already had been turned over to the city attorney to Scott Kurt W Scott of Corning is this weeks winner in the football con test Scott missed only one the Kansas State and Missouri contest won by was closest on the tiebreaker score He receives Second place again with only one miss went to Cone England of Corning Cone missed the Shenandoah at Creston game and was not as close on the tiebreaker She receives Scott had 56 for the total score of the Iowa vs Northwestern game while England had 35 as the total The actual total was 59 with Iowa winning 4910 Third place was a tie between Al Teetshorn of Afton and Teresa Matheny of Coming Each missed and each as the tiebreaker total Teetshorn was wrong on the vs Missouri matchup and the Illinois State at Drake game Matheny missed on the game and the Pittsburgh vs Navy game won by Navy Four people missed just three The game between Hamburg and Essex was thrown out because that game was played last week And speaking of last week The scorekeeper had a really bad ween fouling up results and causing some grief among the top prize winners The Drake Univer sity game with Texas of Arlington already had been played and the grid scoresheet was mismarked on the Grambling game After the en tire contest was refigured the first and second place winners remained unchanged with one miss only instead of three and the third place finisher because Mike Klinger of Central College in Pella Klinker edged Klint Jones who also missed only two but was not as close on the tiebreaker Sorry about that folks There are just two weeks left in the contest season Since Corning played its final game of the season Clarinda was scheduled but qualified for the Raiders will not be included on the contest again this year Results from getting by Kan sas Navy over Pittsburgh Creston over Shenandoah and Iowa over Northwestern to retain the language regarding health insurance which stipulates that the board contributes no more than per month toward a fulltime em ployees premium The teachers are asking for full coverage of a fulltime employees health insurance and that employees choosing single coverage shall be enrolled in an an to be not less than one dollar amount difference between full family and single insurance board requests discussion on two other articles which the teachers seek to change These involve sick leave accumulation and voluntary and involuntary transfer from positions with the school system Variety show in two weeks A healthy list of fresh new talent is being lined up for the third annual Variety Extravaganza slated for pm Saturday Nov 16 at the high school auditorium Only one night is scheduled this year About a dozen acts are being booked by cochairmen Jane Seaton and Doug Sickler They promise new talent this year drawing from the immediate Corning area Finishing touches are being placed on the plans which include a rede signed program and special treats during intermission Reserve are urged to attend Neill named Natalie Neill of Corning Commu High School has attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa High School Musicians by being selected as a member of the 1985 AllState band is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Neill of Route 4 Cor ning and is an instrumental student of Pete Jacobus District Auditions for the 286 Piece AllState Band were held Saturday Oct 26 Approximately 17 percent of the students who try out are selected for membership in the AltState Honor Groups Par will rehearse in DCS Moines on Friday Nov 15 and in Dos Moines and Ames on Satur day Nov 16 The Festival Concert will be presented to the public at pm in the Hilton Coliseum Iowa State University Ames on Saturday evening Nov 16 Guard honored Co A of the Iowa National Guard topped the 1st Battalion 168th Infantry in enlistments for the year from Oct 1 1984 through Sept 301985 The company with ters in Corning and detachments in Villisca and Clarinda was honored last week at an awards banquet in Council Bluffs With the banner recruiting year the company now stands at 128 percent of strength highest in recent years This follows a reorganization of the Guard in Southwestern Iowa last year when Clarinda became a part of the Cor ning company and the letters table of organization strength was adjusted Detachment I at Villisca was honored for the Best Audit in the battalion
