Corning Chamber of Commerce and County Industrial Develop ment Corporation The foundation would be set up to receive donations bequests or outright gifts for use in improving Corning Alec Turner Chamber president was named as that groups representative During its regular monthly meeting Thursday Sept 12 the Chamber board also discussed developing a permanent slogan for the Chamber and community and learned that the Community Pride Committee plans to sponsor down town and residential exterior Christ mas light contests this winter The possibility of horsedrawn wagon rides to tour the lights is being con In other business the Chamber board discussion of 1986 which will be hosted by Corning this year The Chamber discussed combining the celebration with Iowas Homecoming 86 a state sponsored event PTA names new officers First meeting of the year for Cor ning Association was held Thursday night at the elemen tary school with election of officers taking place LuAnne Brown was selected as president Glen Roberts as vice president Jan Sills secretary and Connie Nolan treasurer Committees also were formed for the year These include the following Program Merri Olive Sharon Neal Erma Fuller Sharon Sorensen Bos well Shirley HUmpson Reynolds Mary Sally Yahnke Other business was having a float in the homecoming parade a membership drive and open house at the high school Dues were set at per person or per family Anyone interested in belonging can pay their dues to any PTA officer Bylaws for the PTA were approved and will be sent to the state PTA group for final approval Light school vote turnout Voting was light in school board elections throughout the area last Tuesday Roger Sorensen won reelection in Corning District 1 receiving 41 votes There were votes for Cheryl Helvie 8 and Terry Curry 2 Doug Leonard received 15 votes as director from District 5 Incumbent Chuck Lund waa not seeking re election Incumbent Myron Shires was renamed in Prescott District 4 with 38 votes In District 3 there were no filings but Byron Brown garnered 16 votes He has been serving the position by appointment Also receiving votes were Karl McCarty 14 Wayne Wilson 2 nnd Paul Gray 1 Robert Brown was not a candidate for reelection in Lenox District 2 but received 26 votes to 20 for Kathy Freeman Totals at Bedford included District 1 JB French 560 and Steve Kernen 406 District 5 Joseph R Everhart 618 Wayne and Agatha Norton 67 In Villisca voting two incumbents were reelected Don Williams District 2 86 votes and Lei and at large 75 votes Et Humpty Dumpty Humpty Dumpty Preschool is planning a second session to begin in early October if the required number of students are registered The age limit is four years old as of Jan 15 1986 For further infor mation see Marshalls Of fice and tho Corning Volunteer Fire Department Tho fire gutted the homes basement and the main floor den Getter to chair board conduct hearing held Japanese culture Shinobu Watanabi an English teacher in his homeland of Japan spent several days recently in area schools talking with students He waa here through a program with Iowa State Association and stayed two weeks in Nodaway with the Pat Shipley family Mrs Shipley is a junior high English teacher Shinobu showed slides of his native land and talked with second and fourth grade students last week Freshour gets temporary permit The Adams County Board of Supervisors Friday granted a six months temporary permit in ap proving a rezoning request by Richard Freshour that would change a parcel of property he owns in Brooks from business to industrial The change from Bl to II previously had been approved by the Adams County Zoning Commission The commission decision is subject to supervisor action in acceptance or rejection It was indicated that further ap proval of request would be contingent on any complaints during the period ending March 131986 for this approval was by Supervisor Richard Can tieri seconded by Duane Birt The ap proval vote was unanimous Prior to this action the board defeated a motion by Supervisor Jim Amdor to deny the change Second was by Supervisor Don Wolf Super visors Verlyn Rice Cantieri and Birt voted against the motion A motion by Amdor to completely abolish zoning in the county laid on the table for lack of a second The board unanimously approved a request by Norvell Houck seeking change on a parcel of land from agricultural to business This request also previously had been approved by the zoning commission In other business board approved a request by Deputy Sheriff Boil Herring Law Enforcement Intelligence Network school at Military Academy at Camp Dodge Oct 21 to Nov 1 the tally books of the Sept 10 school elections No changes were made in the figures Set Friday Sept 27 as the date for public auction of miscellaneous items The list will be found elsewhere in an advertisement in this issue of The Free Press Approved sale of a used copier machine to Verlyne Westphal for Jerry Getter was named president of the Corning School District Board of Education Monday night during the groups meeting replacing Roger Sorensen Getter was named on the second ballot after a tie between himself and Sorensen Sorensen and Doug Leonard newest board member also were sworn into office by board secretary Jean Nevius The board suspended until Wed last night a hearing in violation of the schools good conduct policy by a high school senior The student was suspended from extracurricular activities test week after he was seen drinking beer by a high school teacher The student one of five suspended for alleged involvement with beer the weekend of Sept 78 appealed his suspension to Superintendent Ken Mallas and then to the board of education A good conduct committee was the first group to question the student and make the suspension The student and his mother main Monday night that the teacher could not prove the student was drinking beer because he was too far away when the incident occurred The mother admitted providing her son with beer during the weekend in the privacy of a home and the student admitted drinking beer the previous day but both say he was not drinking beer when spotted by the teacher The hearing was suspended until the teacher and a coach could be present to provide information sup porting the suspension The student also told the board members he felt the suspension was too strict in relation to the infraction even though the suspension is thoroughly outlined in the good con duct policy which was adopted by the board in June A leaky roof at the elementary building could cost the school district up to before the problem is fixed Leaks over the music room at the building and on the east pod will total about The board said it would personally review the problem before making a decision also expect ed at yesterdays meeting In other business the board Personally thanked Chuck Lund retiring member of the board in District 5 He was replaced by Doug Leonard after Lund decided not to seek reelection Lund served for nine years and received the personal thanks of Superintendent Mallas and board president Sorensen a contract for new elementary principal Richard Shellenberg and allowed up to for moving expenses Getter and Leonard as Iowa Association of School Boards Network representative and alter nate Heard that between 10 and 15 persons applied for the hot lunch directors post Ruth Rex will be retiring at the end of this school year Learned that certified enrollment for the year is 630 down about II students from a year ago There are 351 at the elementary level 106 at the junior high and 173 at the high school the low bid from Ander Oil Co for gasoline for the year Bid waa per gallon in 24 cents for federal and state gasoline taxes Superintendent Mallas as the schools voting delegate to the Adams County Rural Electric Cooperative Perfect score A last minute change on the Drake vs Iowa football game gave Pat Moore Route 4 Corning a perfect score in last weeks Free Press football contest Moore used his common sense in making the change and won There were some surprises but Moore survived through luck or by an educated guess He was the first entrant this season to get them all correct Second place and goes to Jon Hill also of Corning He missed only the Northwestern vs Missouri contest which was the spoiler for most of the contest en trants There were nine persons who missed just one game this week but seven of those were the North game The other two missed on the Utah State vs Iowa State game and the East Union at Corning game Third place went to Nick Keefe who one again the Missouri game He will collect for his effort The tiebreaker was the deciding factor in and third place winners Hill was perfect in his guess of the total score of the Arkansas vs Mississippi game won by Arkansas 2419 for a total of 43 Keefe guessed 44 for the tie breaker score Creston at Bed ford game Veda McCarty presents plaque to Mr and Mrs Cliff Brown right and Mr and Mrs Doug Brown as Region 8 winners of the Iowa Association of Soil Conser vation District Commissioners competition The Browns advance to the state contest Cliff Doug Brown earn soil award County traffic mishaps increase in 1984 Traffic accidents in Adams County during 1984 increased by six from 107 to 113 the Iowa Department of Transportation said this week in an annual report There were 55 injuries reported from traffic mishaps during the period the same total as during 1983 The accident report from nearby counties included Taylor from 135 down to 108 Union iron up to 330 Adair from 179 down to 164 Cass from 358 to 402 Montgomery from 315 down to 296 and Page from 336 down to 291 Injuries for the comparable years were Taylor from 52 down to 30 Ringgold from 46 down to 24 Union from 122 down to 113 Adair from 102 down to 65 Cass from 152 up to 158 Montgomery from 109 up to 131 and Page from 113 down to 98 Clifford and Doug Brown of Cor ning were announced as Region 8 winners of the Iowa Association of Soil Conservation District Commis competition at the groups semiannual meeting here Thursday night Approximately 50 persons atten ded a dinner gathering in the Corning Community Building Wilbur Wash burn of Mills County and a regional director presided Plaque award was sponsored by the Adams County Farm Bureau Presentation was made by Veda Mc Carty of Prescott county womens Farm Bureau president In qualifying for the Region 8 honors the Browns had been winners of the annual Kenny Barker soil award presented by the Adams County Soil Conservation District Commissioners As regional winners they will enter state competition District Conservationist Brian Peterson presented a slide show narrative on the Browns farm operation It was noted they have practiced soil conservation for many years as evidenced by gradient terraces that still are maintained in good condition Six ponds provide a water supply and gully stabilization They have built narrow base terraces and this year planted 60 acres of corn Contour farming is standard on their farms and fences and field boundaries are on the contour Both have served as directors for the 102 River and Walters Creek watersheds Regional essay winners also were named during the meeting They in cluded Senior Cindy Chafa deputy state fire marshall was surveying the scene Monday for clues The Petersons were not home when the fire broke out shortly before 1 pm Firemen were sum moned about pm and arrived to find fire coffee so the farm couple may invite the businessman out to the farm on a date of their choice Purpose of the visitation is to continue the cooperation and un between the farm and business communities Open house Adams County officers will host on open house at the courthouse in Corning Friday Sept 20 from 9 am to 5 pin The public is invited to view im completed during the past few months including in of a new elevator In connection with the open house the weekly Corning Cham ber of Commerce coffee is scheduled Friday at the court house at 10am HS open house The faculty of Coming High School will host an open house for parents and interested individuals Thursday There will be an opportunity for those attending to follow the schedule of their child through the school day Visitors will pick up student schedules outside the high school auditorium between 7 and pm At a short orien tation will be held with the first class to begin at pm Each class will last about 15 minutes during which time the teacher will explain some aspects of the course Crop walk The Steering Committee headed by Fr Fred Reischl has set up the dates for this years crop walk and the signup rally The walk will be held on Sunday Oct 6 starting at pm with the start and finish at the Central Park in Corning The recruiter and rally will be held at the United Methodist Church at pm Sunday Sept 22 After the rally the walkers will be walking through city neighborhoods recruiting pledges for the 10 mile walk Many local youth and school youth groups will be The planning committee urges the adult population to
