9 1984 Volume No 18 25 cento Industrial news good Glowing reports presented by heads of major existing industries in Adams County Thursday night projected an encouraging future for the community in this area Occasion was the annual meeting of the Adams Community Industrial Development Corp and the Bluegrass Building Inc in the community building in Corning Officials were encouraged by the crowd of more than 50 attending Reports were presented by Lee Elliott National Farmers Organiza tion Bob Cox Mickey Smart Gold smith Lazy Pak Bob Guhse Easy Heat and Mel Bramble All of the reports contained a positive thrust and all expect future expansion Industrial success general ly is measured in expansion of facilities ACID President Austin Turner chaired the meeting and noted that 36 percent of the young people leave the community because of the lack of job opportunities We are in continual contact with the Iowa Development Commission in seeking out additional industries Turner noted Our constant goal is the search for more job opportunities m the community Turner pointed out that there is adequate land and space available in the Bluegrass Industrial Park This is to our advantage for the utilities and other basics are there and available Down the road with the securing of additional industries officials see the possibility of construction of another spec building Speaker was Craig on focusing attention to the importance of participation in the and campaigns of Republican candidates One of our goals is to actively demonstrate that Adams County residents can make a positive impact on government through active participation in the Republican party Stu Nielsen Corning Democratic county chairman said he anticipates a strong rural or farm flavor to his convention Historically employees of the National Farmers Organiza tion have provided important and detailed farm policy information in the local platform Nielsen said This hns usually carried through to the district and levels Increased participation and atten dance nt the county level are the immediate goals ot both parties though Chairman Nielsen said it will he difficult to match the Kennedy Carter enthusiasm of the 1980 caucuses Were hoping to equal past attendance but the contest was fantastic in bringing in support he said GOP Chairman Mallas said as we become more involved in the 1984 campaigns we are committed to seeing that all those who share Republican goals in an opportunity to moke an impact on the partys election success next November Iowa Development Commission in Des Hamilton said the commission is in the process of restructuring and that marketing thrust will be the new look of the IDC He congratulated the Corning and Adams community for its industrial progress You people have done your homework well and we never hesitate in recommending an industrial to look at Corning Hamilton commented We IDC enjoy oar relationship with your community Hamilton said that there will definite industrial prospects for the community within the next few months The IDC spokesman said the groups organization through a retention package will have access to eight million industrial contacts We think this will have a big impact in improving our industrial procure ment He also discussed the area of tax and utility revision in order that communities may provide a better industrial attraction In final comments Hamilton warned that the competition for industry is fierce and brutal You must be prepared to do battle A great deal of industrial literature was on display year reflecting an increase of about 856000 Public hearing on the budget will be held Feb 27 during regular session of the City Council City Clerk Karen Peterson was to meet with a League of Municipalities budget expert in further refining the figures Anticipated revenue for the next fiscal year is estimated at 8763213 and compares to 8699428 for the current year for an increase of The general fund budget will be compared to 8283260 for last year Increases on the expenditure side of the budget include for com munity protection This will cover cost of a new police car Human development will increase policy and administration 81000 and home and community environment Mrs Peterson said of the home and community environment jump will be set aside for possible construction of a new maintenance building to house city equipment which now sits outside during the winter The citys debt service will increase to cover payoff of street improvement debts and road use expenditures will increase as well Sources of revenue will include from property tax from fee services such as sewer and garbage interest income and other incidental fees State shared revenues will provide road use taxes liquor profits etc and carryover from the current fiscal year will provide a large chunk The City Council held a special meeting Wednesday Feb 1 to give its approval to a preliminary budget Continued on page 7 Tragedy struck the Corning Volunteer Fire Department early Monday morning when fireman Carl Johnston was critically injured while at the scene of a house fire at the Donald Drennan farm home 13 miles northwest of Corning Family sources say Johnston is in Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha with broken broken ribs and a broken shoulder He reportedly is paralyzed from the waist down and is awaiting surgery Johnston apparently was hurt when the houses chimney buckled and fell on him Firemen had attempted to push in a wall of the house and were walking away when the chimney fell hitting Johnston on the head His protective head gear is believed to have saved his life Also hurt was Drennan who was hit by debris from the chimney He received a broken left arm and shoulder injuries Both were taken to Rosary Hospital by Adams County Service and Johnston was later transferred to Omaha Family members said Tuesday morning that despite his condition Johnstons spirit is great Alarm time was about am When firemen reached the vacant but partially furnished home it was engulfed in flames Massena teer Fire Department provided mutual aid assistance The home was considered a total loss Cause of the fire is as yet undetermined and investigation con About 11000 gallons of water was used The Drennan fire was the third house fire in three days all resulting in total losses The first was reported about am Friday six miles northeast of Corning at the Tim Thomas home The house was in flames when firemen arrived No one was at home at the time but the Thomas family was packed to move to South Dakota and all belongs were lost Thomas was a tenant in the home owned by the Farmers Home Administration Cause was believed to be from a small space heater Prescott teer Fire Department provided mutual aid The other blaze of the weekend came about pm Saturday east of Bushville at the Mrs Earl Steele home Again the house was a total loss According lo reports she was home and had gone outside to start her car Upon returning to the home she noticed smoke When firemen arrived the blaze was smoldering but soon erupted into flames that could not be controlled High winds began to boil this week with an by candidates for state and county positions in this area Incumbent Horace Daggett R Lenox has indicated his intention to seek reelection in the Iowa House of Representatives from the Dis The district includes Douglas Quincy Prescott Union Nodaway Jasper Mercer and Grant townships in Adams County and all of Taylor Ringgold and Decatur counties Daggett staled It is my desire to be a spokesman for the people of District 92 I want to continue my work on educational and tax issues plus working for the needs of and promotion of this area of the state Daggett currently is serving his sixth term in the Iowa Legislature His current committee assignments are Education Appropriation Educa tion Ways and Means and Human Resources He is ranking member of
