Color Country Spectrum (Newspaper) - January 12, 1977, Saint George, Utah Cattle disease explained Extra effort is being urged for control of Brucellosis disease according to Dr James L Shupe extension veterinarian Utah State University He noted that in the United States Brucellosis is primarily a problem in cattle and to a lesser extent in swine Other animal species such as sheep goats dogs and some also may become infected Brucellosis can be smitted from animals to humans either by physical contact or else by drinking raw milk from infected cows In humans it is usually called or Malta fever Since the disease is not transmitted from one human to another prevention of brucellosis in livestock will help eliminate the human health hazard Brucellosis in cattle is a serious and costly disease Infected cattle may abort and often become problem breeders and may became sterile They generally have a reduction in their milk producing ability Cattle in infected herds have fewer calves than normal Besides these production losses also have maintenance costs for non- productive cattle Cattle can acquire brucellosis by licking recently aborted fetuses or the genitals of infected cows or occasionally by eating or drinking contaminated food or water The infected pregnant animal is the most common source of infective material which is discharged in great quantity at the time of abortion or calving One cannot tell if a cow is Infected by just looking at her The most obvious signs are abortion usually in the later part of pregnancy birth of weak calves and retained placentas An in- cow may give birth to a normal calf however and still spread brucellosis organisms bacteria in the fluid that escapes from her uterus With few exceptions brucellosis is spread from one herd to another by in- or exposed animals There is no known cure for brucellosis in cattle Calfhood vaccination and good herd management especially avoiding the introduction of infected animals are essential preventive measures Age limits for brucellosis vaccination are taken from the uniform methods and rules as set by federal and state regulations It is recommended that young heifer calves be properly and officially vaccinated with strain 19 vaccine at the following Dariy heifers 2 to 6 months and Beef Heifers 2 to 10 months program sets deadline CEDAR farmers wishing to carry out a practice under the 1977 program are encouraged to file an plication before Feb 24 This will insure that each farmer and rancher will be given equal opportunity for approval regardless of the season on the year the practice might be formed Farmers should also take note that The Livestock Feed Program is being phased out as the limited stocks of Commodity Credit Cor- oats available in the reserve for under this program are depleted Authority to acquire feed grains for the disaster reserve is limited to those obtained under the Price Support Program Market prices have been above support levels Therefore no grains have been acquired by CCC since 1972 Zion Park announces statistics Travel to Zion National Park near Springdale totaled visits for the 1976 calendar year cording to Superintendent Robert C Heyder This figure represents a five percent increase over the 1975 calendar year Travel for the month of December totaled visits up 13 percent over December 1975 Campground use of 1976 totaled campers a decrease of four percent as compared to 1975 use for December was 888 campers which represents a 48 percent increase over the month of December in 1975 The end of year increase in camping activity was probably due in part to the mDd weather The Kolob Canyons Road in the Park is closed for the Because of snow ice rock and mud slides travel on this road is hazardous during the winter months The small amount of travel during winter months does not justify the expense of keeping this road open Superintendent Robert C Heyder announced that the five road will be reopened in the spring and will remain open during the spring summer and fall travel season ASC plans for new year CEDAR new Agricultural Service Center recently held an open house
