LINE LAUNCH GASO A Trip On Suttons to Be Seen Only From a Boat The view along the riverfront ot is interesting sometimes it is picturesque some times revolting boat always inter esting Such a trip was made Monday by a of ocrat office Captain Pete Sutton and Captain Fred Bartlett Your entitled toa if you run a gasoline so propel the it will Riding the river bank you see Jefferson City wholly distinct in their manner ot living than that from the rest of the city They a people who haye wub the the city for while owning their cwn homes they are neither bothered by taxes or street Their highway is the great Missouri and they bow to no one save who the elements that lashes the Big Muddy into a fury They live in house hoats on the banks of the river and their chit dren playing in the sand as the good settlement While the women pi Greater J efferson looking after domes tic or social duties these women were sitting on a log in the some willows paddling their feet freedom of chil drenin the river caring neither for man or God Riding a little further along we ran into a stench that caused Cap tain Satton to almost turn the boat over in his effort to make a quick getaway When we got near the Kingdom side we could smell the aronia of the river ming led with the sweet smell of willows which was as heaven to hl in comparison to the slaughter house view From this point we had a good view of the majestic Callaway bluffs one on side and the busy unpoetic Jefferson City on the other These trips are made daily by tbe many gasoline launch asts in this city and there are quite a few here Here are some of the owners of gasoline launches Albert Longmecker Emil Schott and Louis Otto Brown Oscar W and er Captain Sutton is a former river pilot and handles his launch bet ter than any one else on that ac count He his boat to towns along the Missouri river frequently KNOCKS WINDOW Blast ot Dynamite Sends 10Pound Boulder 80 Feet Monday about noon what came hear being a very badB catastrophe happened at the home of E F Buehrle on Dunklin street The city is grading Dunklin street in this vicinity and at a place about eighty feet Mr res idence they had to do some blast ing About noon yesterday a heavy blast was made and a boul der weighing about ten pounds was hurled through the air about 80 feet striking the window of Mr residence narrowly miss ing the children who were playing in an adjoining The the window and whea the parties having the blasting in what the damage was it at their cost The breaking of the window was whol ly unavoidable and no one jas to COMMERCIAL CLUB EFFORTS TO INCREASE THE MEMBERSHIP MADE Letters Being Sent to AII Busi ness Men Who Are Not Members Object a Good A PROGRESSIVE FIRM EAST END CATHOLICS Establish a That End The officials of the Commercial Club of Jefferson City are putting forth their efforts to make of this city the desirable place it should be Their aim at is to get all business men interest ed in the movement of building up the town and reaching out for more enterprises To this endthe club lias sent out circular letters to all business men in the city who are not members of the club them to become members and thus assist whole in the welfare of the city is a the letter that has been sent out J There are great possibilities for Jefferson City within If our people are alert act unitedly much can be Capital City Wagon Co Makes Extensive Improvements The Capital City Wagon of which A Kocher is president and E J Dricks is secretary has just installed about two dol lars worth ot new machinery with which to meet their ever growing demand of business This firm is a sample of Jefferson Citys progressive busi aess men andf their Business hav ing increased in the past few months to such an extent that they either had to enlarge their plant or put in a branch they thought it advisable to increase their facilities by putting in upto date machinery and preparing themselves to handle twice their regular business in their present quarters These gentlemen have the reputation of putting out noth ing but work and with their present facilities they will be able to to the wants of their maay customers in a much more satisfactory manner it is currently reported t town today that the oi the Catholic church living in the East End are contemplating the erection of a church edifice in of the city The location oi the building has not yet been upon but as there are a of desirable locations im that end of town it is of minor im as to that part of the work just now The Democrat is informed that has offered by parties inter ested and that a committee will soon take the matter in hand and raise the necessary amount to a fine church oi that faith ED that portion of the city The con at St Peters church is becoming very large and the town being of such proportions is inconvenient for those living inthe extreme ends of city to attend church makes it that a place of worship in that end of the town would be a great convenience accomplished for the advance ment of the citys growth and progress The Commercial is giv ing its best efforts to this import ant work Every spirited citizen should be a member oi this club to the end that it fhe benefit of your advice Counsel and financial assistance Every public spirited citizen should bear SOYS TAKE A RIDE Two Miscreants priate the Use of Uncle Nick Wards Horse A Trip East Mr Dave Callahan and son Richard left an sive trip east They will go to Cincinnati Washington D thence down the Potomac to Nor folk and Old Point Comfort They will then go up the Hutson to New York Buffalo Niagara Falls Toronto Canada and visit relatives in Detroit before return ing home The trip is taken in hopes that it will benefit Richards health who was the victim of bad accident about ten a very months Sunday morning Uncle Nick Ward of came to town to attend divine worship He came in horseback and hitched his horse to the rack in front of the court house While he was at tending worship a couple of boys one white and one colored his faithful steed and pro to the Moreau to bask in the sun and the rippling of the cool waters Tiring of their sport they proceeded back to town and were overhauled in the east end at town by Mr Schneider who returned ths exhausted horse to its owner The authorities were no about the matter but up to present time they have not been apprehended A Kingery was the name of white boy and Russell Street is the name of the colored lad ago a part of these burc Within the last three months there have been seventyfive addi tions to the club The member now numbers one hundred and fifty The membership fee is and the are only 50 cents There are no salaried officers and every dollar goes to the ad vancement of the public Those of our business men who not belong to the club should their assistance is needed in looking after the busi ness interests of the city By all working as a unit in any matter better results can be attained and all parties can share alike in the of the citys inter ests fee for being a member is not an extravagant one and most any business afford to be long As the letter sent out says there are no salaried officers but all that is paid into the treas ury of club goes toward the the citys best in Business men getting these let ters should not cast them aside and say them go ahead but should imme send their name to the secretary and become one of the Capital City boosters RIVER FREIGHT First freight Line Boat to Leave Louis Saturday The old freight business by boat from St Louis City is to be resumed Saturday at day break a boat with a barge attached will leave the wharf at Louis with freight along the line from bt Louis to Kansan City The boat will probably reach Jefferson City some time Sunday has been formed in Kansas City and should it prove that the riyer is as navigable as it was in former days there will be established a line of freight boats St Louis and City which will greatly reduce the freight rates from that metro FOLK BETTER IS STILL UNABLE TO ATTEND BRYANS RECEPTION His Physician Says Trip Would Be Too Much for Him Hopes Will Have Great Reception Gov Folk was much better to day arid was able to dress and re visitors He did not go to the capitol however but remained at the mansion and rested He is contemplating a trip in the near future when he do noth ing but recuperate in health His doctor C P Hough says he needs rest The governor will not make the trip to St Louis to attend the Bryan reception on the advise of his physician Dr Hough said the governor has been ill for two weeks one of which has been spent in bed and this has left him in a weakened condition and it will take some time for him to fully recuperate HAS NO OPPONENT Two Republican County Candt dates Has a Clear Field At a meeting of the Cole county Republican committee held Satur day afternoon Mr W A meyer who was the party nomi nee for county treasurer tendered as did also George F Robinson who was nominated for the office of probate judge Mr A Bauer was unanimously chosen to make the race for coun ty treasurer aud Judge Sommer who was the nominee for judge of the county court from the first dis was to a candi date for the office of probate judge This leaves the field clear so far as Mr Overman is concerned Fear of party defeat was assigned as the cause of the gentlemen send iag in their resignations IlS The boat that will start from St Louis Saturday is only a trial trip and if it is proved that the river is navigable all the way up other boats will be put ohto take City have signified their inten tion of going down to St Louis tonight to the reception which will be given to William Jennings Bryan in that city to morrow A meeting of the Capi tal City Democratic Club was call ed Saturday night for the purpose of getting up a delegation to at tend this function and quite a num ber who attended the meeting of the club then and there signified their intention of going Since the meeting there have been sever al others who have said they would go and in all there will be twenty five or more representing the Democracy of the capital City on the occasion One of the princi pal reasons for wanting a good delegation is the fact that an effort wll be made to get Mr speak in this city some time diir ing the campaign and it was thought best to go down as organised
