penitentiary was dr at 2 oclock Wednesday af to save his f a watery grave Hesse was rowing overta farm in a boat with the when nearly over some manner got the river Hesse tried to dog baek into the boat dog was piece of string Hesse led it and endeavoring to pull the the stern end of the boat gave way and the caused him to lose the river was to grab the dag and endeavor to swim to the boat with the dog but his strength gave out before he got tp the boat He would not let go his hold on the dog said an eye wit for had he done so he would have managed to swim to the boat and swim with the assistance of thp boat until help arrived boat were later rescued by Carl Morrow who was the scene in another skiff Morrow was not able to get to the boat in time to resue Hesse Hesse came here from Washing ton where he has A E BARRADELL HERE of the Jefferson City Commercial College Here A E Barradell of the Com College located here ar Mt Vernon last night and will be here until this school is in fine running shape Mr was teacher in math at the High school of Mt Vernon last year and his work there has just been completed so he will take an active part in the work here from now on We are going to give Jefferson City one of the best commercial col leges that can be organized We are now negotiating with some o the best commercial school teach ers and will have them here as soon as possible We now have three colleges one at one at Alton and the third here The social and ath features of all these colleges are always looked after and I ex to have charge of the athletic work I trained the foot bal team of Mt Vernon last year and it was one of the best in southern Illinois so I hope to bring ou good athletic work here The students will be taught to use the three principal type writers and not too much to say hat the money spent in 1896 to the election of Bryan re plied in political as was never before exper in the United States and which the politics and busi leiss of this country have not yet It is not far from the to say that the country has more by reason of the po corruption of the 1896 cam that it would have suffered the triumph of free as that would have been Bryans triumph of free silver would have given the markets a terrible shock but Bryan could not have really done much harm n a practical way and the coun try would have made a speedy recovery from the disaster but i will take many years to re cover from the effects of the political debauchery which has jeen brought about by the abuse of millions of dollars in the politi cal How Bryan Grows The Wall Street News a seats in the wagon alongside the leader Tammany is in trouble again Mayor McClellan was said to be aying plans to oust Charles F Murphy from control at the Sep ember primaries and to name his successor aiming thereafter to swing the Democratic state con vention his way and to make him self the state leader This pro posed campaign was so strongly objected to by prominent demo crats who said it could not at present defeat Murphy and would certainly help Hearst that it has en postponed Murphy on his side has just made a shrewd move to retain his power by suddenly springing two resolutions on the Tammany executive committee providing for the retention on that committee of all the district lead ers who lost their districts through the late reappointment and for naming leaders in the five new districts created The resolutions were passed but Murphy seems to have made a blunder in not put ting in these five men while he could not do so unopposed since the McClellan forces taken by surprise when the resolutions were passed are now preparing to prevent their election Murphy however can stave oft a contest for a time inasmuch the chair one of his men alone has the power to call a meeting Meanwhile the fight between the factions is centering on District Attorney Jerome who is reported to have been slated for governor by McClellan while some of his enemies have asked for his re Wants to Oust Murphy New June 13 Special Correspondence to the Democrat William Jennings Bryan called New York the country just before his visit during the campaign of 1896 When he lands here about the first of next August returning from his trip around the world he will find friends so plenty that they are already fight ing among themselves for the honor of receiving him The Democratic Commercial Travelers AntiTrust League with a membership list as long as its name was first in the field opened headquarters and began organizing a big reception com simon pure radi cal Bryan headed by AV R Hearst quickly got to work or an opposition reception and warning people of their way of to accept positions on the rival committee Loca politics as always is getting complicated with what ought Gets to Be Tested Kansas City June Oldham a bookmaker was today convicted of violating a law of the last Missouri legislature prohibit ing the registration of recording of bets on a horse race He was fined The arrest was made to test the law Ah appeal was taken Dr Gardner president of the Jockey club was found not guilty Fischer Dead Mrs Mary Fischer died Thurs day afternoon after a lingering ill ness at the home of her daughter Mrs Mary Patterson on Madison street She was 68 years of age and has resided here nearly all her life She was a highly respected resi dent and leaves three grown chil dren William and Frank Fischer and Mrs Mary Patterson SCHMIEHAUSEN RESIGNS ilVEN FAREWELL BANQUET AT ST PETERS Choir Presents Him With Gold Headed for Europe July 4 Prof H A Schmiehausen principal of St Peters school and choirmaster and organist of St Peters church during the past eleven years has po sition and will spend the summer A banquet was tendered the professor at St Peters hall Mon day night by the twenty members of the choir Father Selinger and Father Geisert being present also as guests The choir presented to Prof Schmiehausen a handsome gold headed cane the presentation speech being made by Speed Mosby Father Selinger in a few appropriate and beautiful remarks expressed the deep thanks of the congregation for the long and faithful service rendered by Prof Schmiehausen Prof Schmiehausen will return from Europe in September when it is reported he will engage in business in this city His many will bs glad indeed to learn that he does not contemplate leav ing the city for good He is one ol the most popular as well as one oi the most cultured citizens of the community an honest capable business man a scholar and an upright Christian gentleman Jef ferson City will join up Chris ATTACKED BY LIONESS LA BELLE SALINA HAS A NAR ROW ESCAPE IN LIONS DEN SATURDAY Lioness Leaped at Trainer From Pedestal and Dragged Her Straw Hat From Her Trickling From Injury La Belle Salina the lion tamer who does one of the big feature acts in the Parker Amusement companys animal shows had a narrow escape from being killed Saturday afternoon says the Se dalia Sentinel while doing a stunt in the animal show amidst a num ber of lions The plucky little lady was taking the animals through their usual paces which she does at each performance and bad almost finished her act when suddenly a lioness called Victoria leaped at her and struck her a ter rific blow inflicting a painful wound about three and onehalf inches in length on the left side of the head and just above the left ear The injury bled freely but the did not seem to mind thein cident and completed the perform ance before seeing Drs E Nasse and A K Heaton who had been summoned to attend her They washed the blood from her head and found that her scalp had beer torn and laid open down to the skull It took four stickes to close the wound and although this was the second time she has been hurt in a similar manner she remains fear less and even though the attend ing physicians requested her to do so she again appeared last evening as usual at the perform ances given When the lioness made the leap she was on a pedestal and Salina off her guard while she attempting to compel Prince lion to climb the elevati The trainers hat saved her from more serious injury as the Hone claws struck it and pulled it fro
