Making this basic and obvious admission we could v then perhaps turn from ar- guing whether empty fire stations make better hockey rinks or wayside chapels and turn our attention to the real to recruit and keep adequate number of firefighters to guarantee that our fire stations are used for the purpose for which they were built It's an offbeat suggestion we're willing to admit but it seems H t that fire station will bring -a fire truck and hoses to the scene not a resident and five juvenile delinquents or members of the Sing and Sew club from a former fire station turned Golden Age Center WAITING FOR ADOPTION JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS After seven years hundreds of miles and thousands of parking tickets Cedar original Meter Mrs Ann Vrba is handing in her badge Despite the nature of her duties Mrs Vrba is a popular and well-known downtown figure During her seven years on the beat she ticketed her husband several times for improper parking practices and on one occasion handed her father one of those little cards that indicate a violation He was a good sport about it she said and paid As the first Cedar Rapids meter felt a little uneasy about her duties for awhile There was considerable grumbling she recalls about female policemen but everyone including r herself soon got used to the idea and the a years on the job passed pleasantly The former meter maid says now that she'd like to devote her time to her band and their seven old daughter The Vrbas make their home at 350 avenue o Shrine Head Accepts Check m a X m 70 ID A basket full of love and plen ty more where that came from is waiting for adoption at the Humane Shelter 700 C avenue Spokesmen for the shelter told the Citizen Times this week that a wide selection of pets are waiting at the shelter for Cedar Rapids families to give them a home With Christmas just around cute little fellows like these pups would easily fill a Christmas stocking and a child's heart with joy The shelter asks a nominal fee for animals placed in homes and the pups promise to be good as gold in ex- change for someone to romp with on Christmas morning Cedar Rapids Shriner Don Fishel said thank you last week on behalf of the Shrine after being presented with a check for from the West Side Civic during the college all star game at Kingston The money will go to the Shrine Children's hospital Deck The Halls Apparently swept away by an early attack of tide exuberance two students themselves municipal court this in week accused of helping themselves to Christmas trees from a Cedar Rapids supermarket The two Jeffrey Houston and William Colgate fully that no- money had changed hands judge early Christmas mood too gave the youths suspended sentences
