Palestinian Policemen Break Into Synagogue in Jericho to Sleep Worshipers at the synagogue in Jericho have complained that Palestinian policemen broke into a room on the ground floor of the building and left food on top of the safe containing the Torah scrolls. Senior IOF and Palestinian police officers arrived immediat~ y at the site upon rece; ving the com~ aint. It appears that policemen who live in a tent near the synagogue looked for a cooler piece to sleep during the night. Labor Poll: Most American Jews Supporl Peace Process By Lauri Neff ( Washington) A new opinion poll shows an overwh~ ming majority of Amercan Jews support the Middle East peece process desNe cortinul)] violern' in Israe ald the =~ ied territcries. The poll, commissioned by the Israel Policy Forum, indicates nearly 9 out of 10 Jlmercan Jews support the peece process. Olly five percent of those intervielM2' d were against it. Five hundred American Jews selected at random were conteeted over the pastlM2' ek for the poll. Tre survey was conducted by Stanley Greenberg, pollster and presidential advisor to President Bill Clinton and Mark M~ lman a leading Democratic Party strategist. Mellman speaking at a news confererce Thursday says there is also broad support for the Isra~ i/ A... O autonomy 3Xord under which Gaza and Jericho have come under Palestinian control. American Jews do have mixed feelings about the Gaza-, Jericho accord, with some 85- percent say they are both hopeful and cautious about the autonomy agreement. Pollster M~ lman says half of those interviewed expressed fear about s~ hule. " Those people who are fearful are fearful about a very particular set of issues and concerns. Fify- four percent of those who were fearful said the; r fears stemmed from threats to Isra~' s natimal security." The poll finds US Jews are generally supportive of the policies of Isra~ i Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin- irduding his willingness to return the Golan He; ghts in exchange for peece with Syria. However, only 14~ ercent in the survey say they b~ ieve Syrian President Hafez ai- Assad is committed to peece The forum was formed recently by American Jews who favor the peece process and say they want to edL.
