has resulted in a disposition on the part of the city to economize although the economy practiced last night was not with the city's money The members of the council decided to tighten the on private pocketbooks There was a lot of talk about economy and admissions that the council had run the city pretty much in the hole financially were general but when it came to putting some of their talk Into ual practice the economy was not with the city's money at all While no denials or attempted as to the financial tion of the city as published in the Chronicle yet the members of the seemed to feel stung the condition of affairs had become generally known to the people of the city They were smarting under the dose of publicity and were resentful toward the source of information through which the people had ed the facts Before was called to order It was decided the one of the proprietors of- the Chronicle should be slapped on the wrist The slap was administered when the city engineer who is smarting because the people have been told the amount of city rants issued in his favor in the last plans for Mr Crawford's ment were ready and that twelve months reported that the the city might instruct the city ney to draw up a resolution for the same It was then that H H Tilley whb has appropriated more public money in Lewis county than any other man arose according to program and the fact that we have been spending the people's money at a pretty fast clip I move that this Improvement district be done away with The motion carried The Chronicle had been informed a week previous in an yesterday afternoon They tried to argue by inference that the fire demonstrated that the city needs an automobile truck As a matter of fact had the city owned sixteen automobile trucks and had they been manned by teen automobile fire crews no more property would have been saved from burning than was saved with the present equipment and force of men who fought the fire yesterday afternoon The only thing the ent department was short on was hose Time and time again Chief Miller had told the members of the council he needed more hose But the city fathers last night dodged the real issue and instead of talking about the need of more hose they talked automobile and the need of another complete paratus That the latter was needed was spoken of in gasps What would have happened with all the equipment at one if another had started at another part of the If the city had two sets of fighting apparatus and two fires should break out at the same time the question might be with equal force What would the city do if a third fire should Reasoning along this line is really no limit to the number of machines which the city I Carry out this line of thought to its logical conclusion and the city needs either a fire wagon and team or an automobile fire truck and for every block in the city and in the long blocks there be at least two such chines equipped with fuft crews The members of the conucil did considerable arguing with selves to make believe an automobile fire truck is needed and Councilman Tilley capped the climax by saying he believed 90 per cent of the taxpayers are in favor city buying an automobile fire truck and the fact that the taxpayers were not on hand last night was proof they are satisfied with the council's in- tention to buy such equipment Con- hot air was indulged in about protecting the property of the citizens and the myth of reducing fire insurance rates was again brought up e MILL STARTS IIP TODAY OUTPUT WILL BE USED FOB OP COUNTT ROAD FROM BARKER
