Serious Crime Increases But More Slowly WASHINGTON AP The nation's crime rate still is going up but it may not be rising quite so fast as it has for nearly two years according to new FBI statistics The statistics issued Tuesday showed that crime in the United States increased 8 percent in the second quarter of compared with the same period a year ago But an 18 percent surge in the first three months of the year pushed the month increase to 13 percent higher than the rate first half of 1974 Attorney Gen Edward Levi called at- tention to the slower rate of increase but said We can claim no great solace in the fact that the rate in the rise of serious crimes has lessened somewhat called the crime rate able and said crime remains an mous national problem Too Soon for Trend It's far too soon to say whether the slower rate of increase for April May arid June represents the beginnings of a downward trend But the 8 percent figure was the first time in 21 months that the Increase has
