Cosmos, The (Newspaper) - May 1, 1895, Cedar Rapids, Iowa THE VOL V CEDAR RAPIDS IOWA MAY 1895 No 8 A LECTURE ON THE HISTORICAL NOVEL HARRIET I wish to speak to you for a little while on a subject which is attracting considerable interest just now and which is a favorite topic with me I refer to the historical novel as we have it today in the English language The historical novel opens to the writer abroad field and many celebrated authors have taken up this kind of literature with success All that is picturesque in history is at the command of the novelist who may array his characters in the like garb of fiction It will be readily seen that no little skill is required to conjure up the ed heroes of the world and cause them to take on living shape The field is great it is true for the author has opportunity to display his power of description in various ways Not only does character study form an important feature but an excellent background may be made of the place where the story is located The earlier novelists were lacking in some respects and paid but slight attention to anachronisms or sudden unexplained change of scenery That may be all very well for some fancifully inclined readers but the staid judgment of the English people demands a logical sequence of time and a change of scenery only when legitimately brought about The historical novel is of double value since it attracts the student of literature on account of its literary merit and in a degree not less the dent of history who welcomes such a production because it will enable him to impress an event upon his memory Or even to one who does not care particularly for history this special form of writing appeals for seldom can he appreciate a masterly novel and not be led to study the history underlying it Thus the mind in seeking ation may be amused and stimulated at the same time into more growth Very rarely does a writer achieve success by a series of books as did Sir Walter Scott More often an author has one book which stands superior to the others and which establishes his reputation but in this instance we would indeed be at a loss to know which book to select Did one choose the adventures of Richard the as told in he would wish also to take The the story of Richard and Saladin Then he would regret leaving the bold outlaw of the border country Rob Roy and equally would he be not to choose the tale of poor Amy Robsart who died in the cruel castle of worth Flora MacDonald as a type of brave Scottish womanhood is second only to the peasant woman Jeanie Deane But to save ourselves from such a state of confusion over pages of ight we will be selfish and take every one of these great books Scott is unequalled as and when we have read one of his novels we do not wonder that he was called the Wizard of the North Scott is like one of his own bards who told stories and sang the adventures of his hero rather than
