come in a pill Widely used DHEA supplements and testosterone patches failed to deliver their touted antiaging bene fits in one of the first rigorous stud ies to test such claims in older men and The substances did not improve the participants strength their phys ical performance or certain other measures of health I dont think theres any case for administering these to elderly peo ple said Dr K Nair of the Mayo Clinic lead author of the study published in Thursdays New Journal of Medicine DHEA a steroid that is a sor to the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen is made by the body but levels decline rapidly after age 25 DHEA supplements arc market ed as rejuvenating agents and sales hit million last year Testosterone is available by pre scription only But the Food and Drug Administration classifies DHEA as a supplement meaning it can be sold without meeting the same safety and effectiveness stan dards as a drug to try to boost perfor mance often in violation of athletic association rules The NFL and other professional sports have banned DHEA Cycling officials have moved to strip the Tour de France title from winner Floyd Landis after a French labora tory found elevated testosterone lev els in his urine Apart from this type of use scien have wondered if the sub stances might help older people Studies with rodents offered tanta results that showed DHEA seemed to decrease fat and fight dia betes and heart disease But there have been few rigorous scientific studies in humans A French study of DHEA in 280 elder ly people reported in 2000 found the only benefit was an increase in female libido A Dutch study this year found no benefit of DHEA in 1 00 men 70 and older The new study was done by researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and the University of Padua in Italy Over two years the researchers studied 57 women and 87 men all of them at least 60 years old The women were given standard daily doses Of DHEA or identical fake pills The men were given real or fake DHEA as well as a testos terone skin patch or a placebo patch Blood samples were taken every three months Participants also were examined for any changes in body fat hormone levels bone density and performance on treadmill weightlifting and leg flexibility tests The men and women also filled out questionnaires about how they felt and their quality of life Although DHEA and testosterone levels increased in the men and women who look the real treat ments mere was no effect on physi cal performance quality of life or the bodys ability to lower levels of Tuesday to a report on Ihc colleges strate gic planning process Math professor Maria Wise chair of the Quality Council said the col lege started the process in February Eight employee focus groups and five student focus groups met in April and May Hive focus groups from communities across Pinal County met in May and June Using the information provided by the focus groups Quality Council members Wrote the first draft in July Fifteen employee review sessions Were held this month at all campuses and centers with 173 employees par Employees still may par through online or hard copy surveys until The council developed a second draft based on information from the employees and planned review ses sions for students and community members in the next two weeks A third draft will be developed based adequate for the size of the city Since then the city has grown and the number of police officers has increased in turn shrinking the available space Everyone in city management agrees that the
