Maricopa areas continue to be focal points for developers of mas communities as evi by the fact that all three work sessions and two of the three regular public hearing cases thai were part of Thursdays county Planning and Zoning Commission meeting were targeted for those areas Work sessions basically are pre sentations by developers to get reac tions and input from both planning and development staff and the com missioners as to the efficacy of their plans prior to coming before the commission with zone change and Planned Area Development overlay requests Hidden Valley a large rural area south of Maricopa in western Final County is not being overlooked as having development potential The commissioners listened to a presen tation by Charlie Hulsey represent ing Vistoso Partners LLC on a potential request for a zone change and PAD overlay district to develop the Verde Grande Village community on a parcel that would have frontage on Arizona 347 on the east Amarillo Valley Road on the west Lane on the north and Arroyo Road on the south Another plan presented to the commissioners was a potential request for a zone change and PAD overlay district by James McMillian to develop the 373lot Casa Grande West community on a 160acre parcel at the southeast corner of Selma Highway and Montgomery Road about two miles south of Francisco Grande Hotel Golf Resort Hulsey stepped forward for a sec ond time representing Vistoso Part ners LLC to present a plan that would seek a zone change and PAD overlay district to develop the Scott Farms master planned community on a parcel miles southeast of Mari copa With no serious objections arising during the work sessions there is little doubt that these projects will be appearing before the commission with their respective Elementary School District Governing Board approved 5 percent raises Tues day for all employees except those who have reached the end of their column pay grade or maximum salary range Those employees will receive a percent increase to offset the increase in state retirement contributions Longevity increases of percent also will be given to certified employees and nurses at or beyond the bottom of Column 7 classified employees at or beyond the end of their pay grade psychologists at or beyond the bottom of and administrators and nonscheduled employees at or beyond the maximum salary for their simultaneous blasts in the coastal city of Casablanca late Friday killing at least 24 people and damaging sites including the Bel gian consulate a Jewish center and a Spanish people were wounded At least three of the explosions were from car bombs and a fourth appeared to be detonated by a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt security officials said A fifth explosion was also heard in the Florence landfill proposition controversial Waste Management asks for town business By MARK COWLING Staff Writer FLORENCE As Election Day nears the group pushing Proposition 201 is say ing the peoples right to choose is a good thing Meanwhile the group fighting 201 says putting a stop to a big landfill full of garbage is a better thing Tuesday is Election Day Registered vot ers living in the town of Florence may cast ballots from 6 to 7 at Town Hall 775 N Main St Voters will choose yes or no on two sep arate issues an initiative governing how the town awards waste contracts and the renewal of the towns franchise agreement with Arizona Public Service Co Pinal County Recorder Laura Dean Lytle said 759 Florence residents requested early ballots for this election As of Monday 301 had been returned The franchise agreement allows APS to construct maintain and operate the electri cal service necessary to serve the town and its citizens The town earns a fee from APS for use of its right of way Far more controversial is the waste ini also known as Prop 201 If voters approve it the town will be required to choose the waste contract for a term of no longer than five years If the Town Council doesnt choose the lowest trash bid or wants the contract for a longer term it must go before the voters Its about giving the people the right to said Greg Johnson manager of Ironwood Landfill and chairman of the committee supporting the initiative Opponents point out it could also force the town back into an agreement with Waste Management operator of Ironwood Landfill WM would like to expand the landfill for five more years of life filling in the gravel pit directly in front of the current landfill The company would also resume truck ing in approximately tons per day of Pima County garbage In exchange Flo rence would receive very low trash rates and a host fee each year to spend as the town wishes With these advantages available from WM the town is currently paying 250 per cent too much for waste disposal the yes committee argues But Johnson said land fill expansion is not even the main issue Id love to expand the site and love to continue taking the towns trash but thats housed in a trailer along an interstate high way authorities said Investigators were looking for two people in a red sedan in connection with the robbery at Blue Ridge Savings Bank said FBI spokes woman Kathleen Murphy The victims were slain with a large caliber handgun authorities said There were no signs of a struggle This was a senseless heinous said Greer police Chief Dean Crisp The victims were identified as bank employee Sylvia Holtzclaw age unknown and bank customers James E Barnes 62 and his wife Margaret 58 Crisp said an unknown amount of money was taken Police cordoned off the bank located in a trailer along Interstate 85 about halfway between Greenville and Spartanburg Blue Ridge Savings is based in Asheville Crisp said construction workers in the area told investigators they saw a red sedan pull up to the bank then leave with two people inside just before police arrived The incident was the deadliest bank robbery since Sept 26 when three gunmen killed five people at a US
