National Guard Armory demolished last week stood for more than 50 years on Marshall Street at the site where ground was broken Thursday for a new police facility The armory built in 1923 was the first home of Compa ny D 158th Infantry of the Arizona National Guard Under the National Defense Act of 1920 Arizona was au to have one regiment of and two batteries of field artillery ters for the infantry were set up in Phoenix Capt Richard H Peart of Casa Grande was authorized by Gov Thomas Campbell and Adj Gen Walter Ingalls to form a local infantry com pany and gather recruits Peart records show had been a Army lieutenant during World War 1 and agreed to accept the assign ment only under the condition that he be allowed to form a machine gun company On May the compa ny received its formal federal recognition After a membership drive 52 mem bers had been recruited the minimum number allowed for a company to be tunned Elected as officers were Peart 1st Lt Dan T Peart and 2nd Lt Merrill C Windsor The company was then faced with finding suitable headquarters The Casa Grande City Council agreed to donate the Marshall Street site for an armory but until it could be built the company was forced to motion to donate the site for the construction of the armors The construction contract was awarded to the Lescher and Mahoney Corp of Phoenix According to Windsor the local guardsmen would set up
