Routes Plans to secure cost estimates the construction of proposed Road were formulated Tuesday afternoon at the regular meeting of the Chamber of Com merce Board Directors held in be Valley Bank Community Room Meeting for the first time since the election of seven new mem bers the Board voted to recom mend to the County Board of Su that a road between Casa Grande and Mari via the route deemed most the Supervisors and er that estimates of It the completion of such a road by proposed routes secured from the Board of Su for publication Kugg appeared before the aew directors to report OR the meeting of the Supervis ors in regard to the Maricopa Boad of the annual Chamber Commerce Banquet were dis cussed the banquet will be held at St Hall November M with all and their guests invited to PROGRESS ON MARICOPA ROAD FOLLOWING PROTEST The Final County Supervisors stopped work on the Maricopa Casa Grande road following a hearing in Florence last week at which opposition was expressed to the construction of the road on the route north of the railroad Present at the hearing were several people opposing to the above route and others favoring it The Board of Supervisors is advertising this week a hearing on the Grande road to be held at the Court House on December 21 The ad appears elsewhere in this issue Spencer Draws 2430 Years For Babys Abduction Faces Sfill More Charges Oi Sodomy Bob Spencer the confessed kid naper and sexual assaulter of 9monthold Daniel Ernest Ste vens in Stanfield six weeks ago given a 24 to 30 year prison sentence Monday on three counts Pleading to all three charges the 23yearold filling station attendant was sentenced on charges of Sodomy and child dealing Judge W C Truman ruled that be 17 to 20 pears for the sodomy charge and 1 to 10 years for Library Board on the pro posed Library for Casa Grande Monday night the City Counci instructed the City Manager M to report at the nex meeting the amount that the City would be able to place in a bond issue for the purchase o property for a Library and build ing and equipping a Library Hie representatives of the Li brary Board headed by Mrs Gladys Burkett agreed to fur nish estimates of the cost of pro perry they desire and costs of a building and equipment for a Li brary Mayor Chet Jones stated thai he is getting calls all the time from citizens streets be paved in front of their pro perty to cut down the dust anc recommended that procedure be started as soon as possible on a paving program Manager Pederson that before they could get esti mates of costs that it would lie necessary to manager ERNEST w MCFARLAND Attendance Reaches New High At C G Elementary Schools Average Doily Attendance Reaches 1828 Over 100 Above A Year Ago The average daily attendance at the Casa Grande Elementary Schools is running over 100 Above the attendance at this time a year ago John Bendixen dent announced this week The average daily attendance at the end of the second month was 1828 which is 106 above the high of 1722 that the schools reached during the same period sst year This is equivalent to Half Million Paid To Countys Cotton Pickets Picking Reaches Midway Point Should Finish Near Dec 1 Cotton picking in Final County las reached the half way point ior the week ending October 28 954 there was bales of cotton ginned in the county bringing the seasons total to 96 bales which is 49 of the estimated yield according to W J Soltau Final County Manager of the Arizona State Employment The increased use of machines las produced aback log of cotton at most of the gins in the county j Last week there was 532 ma chines in operation and they pick ed bales of cotton If the present rate of produc ion can be maintained mately 90 of the crop win be harvested by December 1 In defoliation this month will bring additional machines nto action and increase hand induction Because of the rapid comple ion of the cotton harvest and the hortage of farm housing plans re being worked out to ge additional people from mov ng into this area For it is be any people coming into the area late this month or early December will find very little work and it will be four months before there is any increase more during the next six weeks Attendance at the Elementary Schools has more than doubled during the past ten years The enrollment was only 700 at the end of the second month ten years ago The increase in enroll ment since 1948 has been over 60 per cent The work is progressing on the new elementary classroom build ing and cafeteria Some of the classrooms are expected to be ready for use hi about three weeks and the be completed about ihe of the year The cafeteria will seat 400 children The cafeteria at the South School seats approximate ly The Elementary School is feed ing an average of over pu daily with children eating different shifts The highest number fed in one day this year at the cafeteria is 1067 Hold Open House At All Elementary Schools Tuesday Observe National Education Week Open House will be held at the Jasa Grande Elementary Schools Tuesday evening in observance of National Education Week accord ing to Richard Hughes president of the Casa Grande Classroom Teachers Association Open house is being held in all classrooms of North East South and Central Schools from 7 until 9 pan at each school for the par ents to visit their childrens class zooms and their teachers will be there to meet them General committee includes Mrs Loren Curtis Mrs Gladys Burkett and Robert Snurpus There is a representative from each school serving as chairman for that buildings plans All parents are urged to visit the classrooms and meet the teachers of their children McFarland McFaddin OBrien Udall Davis Pickerel Fin 79 Per Cent Oi Casa Grande Voters Turn Out Ai Polls Seventynine per cent of the registered voters in the three Casa Grande precincts turned out at the polls Tuesday and split their vote to give majorities to some Republicans and some Democrats Although Ernest W McFarland D of Florence won the Gover nors race the vote in Casa Gran de was close with McFarland re 990 votes while Pyle 1066 The County gave McFarland 5862 votes and Pyle 3833 David C Davis of Coolidge won election to the County Board of Supervisors from this district with 2231 votes while Walter Smith of Coolidge received 1920 In Casa Grande Davis received 817 votes while Smith polled 1138 Casa Grande followed the county and state in giving Ste wart Udall a majority vote for Representative in Congress from District 2 Udall received 931 votes in Casa Grande while Zipf received 665 Robert Morrison of Tuc son carried the state in the race for Attorney General against Ross F Jones Casa Gran de voters gave Jones a small lead with 1000 as against 927 for Mor rison m the race for State Superin tendent of Public Instruction Casa Grande went with the coun ty and state hi voting for Har king giving him 1222 votes While Allderdice polled only 606 here Casa Grande joined the county in giving Mary C OBrien County School Superintendent a majority of over 63t tor Juanita Golson J E elected Justice of tine Peace for the Casa Grande precinct with vote of 1398 whue E O Mason re 582 George Pickerel was elect ed Constable for this precinct with 1372 votes against 542 for Morgan The Amendment to the Consti carried in Casa Grande with 674 YES and 457 NO In the contest for Corporation Commissioner Casa Grande join ed the state in giving the Demo cratic candidates John H Berry and Mit a majority William E Stanford can for Tax Commissioner also carried Casa Grande as he did the state In the County Supervisor races for the other districts Jay Bate man was re elected with 2252 votes over 821 Joe Spray of Su was reelected without op position Mrs E Blodwen Thode was reelected without opposi tion for State Representative from this district Elected from the other two districts of the county for State Representative were Harry Bag of Coolidge and Smith of Superior As is usually the case Sophie M Smith for elec tion as County Recorder polled the highest Vote in Casa Grande and also in the county receiving votes in Casa Grande and 7839 in the county Mrs E Blod wen Thode receiving 1592 votes was the second highest inCasa Grande Other county candidates being elected without opposition were W C Truman Judge of the Superior Court T J Marks Clerk of the Superior Court Laurence R White Sheriff Alice M Diffin County Treasurer Timothy J Mahoney County Attorney Charles S Goff Casa Grande arid Ben Arnold Coolidge State Senators Wyly Parsons County As The total
