LaFOLLETTE WINS WISCONSIN FIGHT FOUR TO ONE VOTES OVER COOK IN PRIMARY ELECTION RETURNS NOT ALL IN SENATOR BURROWS LOSES Vermont First State to Hold an Elec tion Sends Republican to Gover nors Mansion by Majority Es at About Milwaukee Sept States Senator Robert M La Follette in the contest for renomination on tile Republican ticket swept the state o Wisconsin hy a veritable landslide it being estimated by returns received that he will have at least four to one against his opponent Samuel A Cook of Neenah candidate of the regulars Complete returns are not expected for two or three days Francis E McGovern candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomina tion defeated his four opponents Lewis Strung and Barker who fin ished in the order named by a plu estimated at nomination is a defeat for county option he main plank on Lewis stood Fair child who finished second was also against county option McGoverns victory is looked upon also as a vic tory for La Follette as he advocated the senators renomination in all his speeches The following Democratic nomina tions were made at the primary elec tions Governor Adolph 1 Schmitz Mil waukee Lieutenant Governor Harry W Bo lens Port Washington The Prohibition party nominated a full state ticket headed by Byron E Van Keuren of Oshkosh for govern or The Social Democrats chose Wil liam A Jacobs of Racine to head their ticket The Original Insurgent Renamed for the Senate bt an Overwhelming Majority the conductor and shot at the train electrician robbed three women pas sengers and escaped from the Pull man sleeper at Carr street and the Terminal tracks The murder and robbery took place in the St Louis yards while the train was from Union Station over the levee elevated tracks to Carr street about a mile and a half ROBERT M LA FOLLETTE of the party in this state to the pro Republican policies ed by President and reaf firmed and already in part enacted into law under the administration of President TOWNSEND AN INSURGENT DEFEATS SENATOR BURROWS Detroit Sept States Senator Julius C Burrows of a standpatter was defeat ed for renomination in the primary elections by Charles 13 Townsend ot Jockson termed an insurgent Senator Burrows served eighteen years in the lower house of congress and fifteen years in the senate Primary election returns also gave the Republican nomination for govern or to S Osborn of Sault Ste Marie former state railroad commis and present regent of the state university In the seven congressional districts where there were Republican contests Congressman G J was re nominated in the Fifth district Con gressman in the Eighth and Congressman Young in the Twelfth district Congressman Washington Gardner was defeated In the Third district by J M C Smith of Char lotte REPUBLICANS LED BY DR MEAD WIN IN VERMONT Burlington Sept John A Mead of Rutland pres ent was elected governor by a majority according to returns received around the average Republican majority for half a century being The Prohibitionists and Socialists had tickets in the field and polled a few hundred votes but Meads princi pal opponent was Charles D Watson of St Albans a Democrat The campaign was waged listlessly The day was rainy and this kept many from the polls especially in the country districts Congressmen David 1 Foster and Frank Plumley were reelected and the legislature as usual is Republi can which insures the reelection of United States Senator Carroll S Page IS 8 DROWN FLOOD Woman and Five Children Drown as Husband Saves One and Houses Washed Away Texas Sept Eight parsons were drowned near as the result of a Hood in the South Leon following a downpour of rain The dead are Terney Mrs George and five children Lenear John Lie near Mrs John George Terney with his babe in his arms saved himself by clinging to a tree The loss of life was in the Gus tine community where the flood came down the river with such force that the houses occupied by the Terney and Lenear families out a single negative vote on any question that came before the state convention the progressive wing of the Republican party in California took over the organization manage ment endorsed the nominees chosen at the recent primaries and adopted a party platform Throughout the proceedings the na tional leadership of Theodore Roose velt was recognized in speech and resolution Every mention of the ex presidents name was received with tumultuous applause The platform declares Hie allegiance Michigan Congressman Who Defeated Burrows for Seat in the Senate Milwaukee Sept Roosevelt has been putting in a busy clay in Milwaukee as the guest of the Press club and the end is not yet The newspaper men spared no efforts to make the visit of the former pres ident pleasant and the program was submitted to him for approval some time ago Arriving from St Paul at oclock in the morning the colonel was met by a reception committee composed oC the following members ofthe Press club Francis A Can non chairman Peck Charles F Pfister John J Harvey Judge John C Karel Postmaster David C Owen Henry Bleyer M C Douglas and H J Desmond After breakfast with the committee at a hotel the colonel was taken on an automobile tour of the city short stops being made at the chamber of commerce he soldiers home the in health convention two trade schools and univer sity At 1280 Mr Roosevelt sat down to a luncheon with the editors the local daily papers and the reception committee and at he received a large number qi the leading men of the state in the parlors of the hotel The colonel is to eat dinner at the Press club only members being pres ent and tins evening he delivers a public address in the Early tomorrow morning he departs for Chicago London Sept a rehearing of much of the evidence produced at the first appearance on Aug 29 of Dr H and Miss Ethel Clare Leneve charged with murdering the doctors wife Belle Elmore their hearing was adjourned until Thurs day A repetition of the earlier hear ing was due to the fact that Sir Albert de Rutzen the presiding judge was hearing the case for tlie first time An appeal for bail for Miss Leneve was denied by the court Both Dr Crippen and the girl were in much better spirits than at their preliminary hearing two weeks ago Only members of the press and those connected with the case were admit ted Travers Humphreys representing the Crown opened the case He said the examination of the remnants of a body found in the cellar of Dr Crip pens Hilldrop Crescent home by Dr Pepper the government showed plainly the marks of a recent operation and the presence of poison It is these remains that the tion must prove to have been the body of Belle Elmore Solicitor Arthur Newton and J H Welfare appeared for Crippen and Miss Leneve Although there is a election constitutional Was the appointment of J R Thornton by Sanders to the States senate legal The trouble arose from a vacancy n the states representation in the trailed States senate Senator Mc Snery died several months ago and the legislature elected Governor San ders to fill the vacancy Sanders accepted and though the senate was not in session and he had not qualified the senate officials in accordance with custom placed his name on the pay roll Sanders later decided that he did not care to go to the senate at this time It appeared that If he left the state his organization might suffer and his political power be placed In jeopardy Having decided to retain his job as governor Sanders appointed J R Thornton United States senator The enemies of Sanders pointed out that under the constitution of Louisiana no maa could hold two offices at the same time They asserted that San ders became senator the moment he accepted the election by the ure and that at the same time he ceased to be governor of the state Sanders signed several bills and they are to be attacked in the state courts on the ground that Sanders had no authority to sign them A contest will be made on Thorntons
