sentenced to 250 days in the county jail His attorneys sued out a writ of habeas corpus before Judge B W Pope of the DuQuoin City Court Sheriff Hanson brought the prisoner here this morning and ap before Judge Pope A question arose as to the jurisdiction of Judge Pope but Judge Pope decided that as the sheriff was here with prisoner in court it was lawful to hear and try the habeas corpus case being continued until next Saturday at the request of Clarks attorneys Mrs B F Rice Found Dead in Cot tage on J Premises Mrs Agnes Eice aged about 50 years was found dead about Sun day morning in the small cottage used as a servants quarters on the J D Peters premises West Main Examination by physicians indicated that the woman had been dead several hours when the body was An inquest was begun yesterday and completed this morning the verdict being that Mrs Rice had come to her death from natural the brain Mrs Rice is the widow of B P Rice who died suddenly of heart fail ure eleven months ago at the home 01 the familly on Birch street fair ground addition an inquest in his death being held on April 14th last Since her husbands death the woman had continued her residence on Birch street taking in washing part of the time but for the past few months she had been employed at the Peters home but still maintained her home on Birch street For several clays last Week the members of the Peters fam ily were all out of town Mrs Rice looking after the house during their absence Being informed of Mr Peters expected return Saturday night she had laid in a supply of provisions and was seen by neighbors as she returned from town about 4 30 p m Saturday the last time she was seen alive Sunday morning Mr Peters noticed the door of the servants cottage standing wide open and on looking within found the dead body of the wo man lying on the bed the body being fully dressed and a cape thrown around her shoulders On the bed beside her lay an orange and an emp ty camphor bottle A bloodstained handkerchief was found on a table near A rumor was current during the day that a murder may have been committed and as usual Coroner investigated this feature of the matter very thoroughly At his suggestion an autopsy was conducted yesterday Drs Keesee and Mitchell at the J C Spence un room but there was noth ing to other than that the death was due to natural the jurys
