I After spending a day in the city j greeting old friends and showing the j different places ot interest to Tom j Finty Jr staff correspondent of the News and who was on his first visit to Brownsville Col S W Fordyce returned this morning to to look after a new dence he is going to have built at that place In conversation with a Herald representative last night Col dyce expressed himself as being greatly surprised as well as pleased at the development that has taken place in the Gulf Coast Country and the Valley of the Lower Rio Grande since he was last here I could hardly believe my own eyes said the Colonel so great has been the development of the country since 1 was here in the early spring Land that was covered with cactus and mesquite in is now under cultivation and producing all kinds of fine crops and it is certainly re markable that such progress lias been made with the great irrigating plants in so short a time These plants have been constructed at an enormous ex pense and the immense amount of money invested in them and in the land they are to benefit ought to be sufficient argument to convince the most skeptical that the Valley of the Lower Rio Grande is going to be de and converted into the great est section of the State I have the most implicit faith in the future and I have shown my faith by investing my money here Col Fordyce it should be remembered is the princi pal stockholder in the St Louis Brownsville Mexico Railroad and is perhaps spending more money in developing the country than any er individual When asked regarding the exten sion of the Brownsville road to Tam pico Col Fordyce said that building a railroad in Mexico was somewhat different from building it in this country There are so many de tails to be worked out he continued that both time and patience are re quired For more than two years now we have been working out these detail and many obstacles that at first stood in the way have been over come Matters are shaping solves up all but little more work is now re a Hired to accomplish the end The Mexican Gov has boon most indulgent and fair hut for awhile obstacles stood in the way which even the Government itself could not overcome in a day or a week Tin international bridge across the Rio Grande will be owned jointly by the Brownsville road and the Va Lines of Mexico and it will be operated jointly by the two roads It will span the river at Brownsville and will be the bridge that ever connected the two republics Just when work on the structure will be gin I cannot say but I dont think the time is very far off when trains will be crossing the Rio Grande at this point Tamaulipas is one of the richest agricultural States in Mexico and one of the least developed Pres ident is a great believer in pro gress and development and I am in formed that he is anxious to see Tamaulipas settled with industrious farmers and made to yield as other grent agricultural States of bis coun try Railroads alone cau settle and develop the country for crops would avail taut little if they could not be carried to market and when these facts are taken into consideration a good reason is advanced why the bridge will be built After spending a few days in Mer cedes Col Fordyce will return to Brownsville and go from here to Point Isabel to put in a week shooting and geese He is very fond of that kind of sport and is always number of towns and cities throughout the state services were held yesterday in memory of the late E W Carmack former United States Senator from Tennessee who was killed here last Monday by Robin Cooper in a street duel Resolutions highly eulogistic of the former Sena tor were adopted by the various gath erings and in several instances the manner of Carmacks taking off was severely condemned The exercises here in Nashville oc curred in the Ryman Auditorium which was filled with an audience numbering fully 7000 persons while hundreds were turned away for lack of space Tributes of song case of false swearing against Henry Clay Pierce having gone over to the January term of the District Court it is expected that it will be set ami called for trial some time during January or February which is just at the time the Texas Legislature will be in session The fact that the Legislature will be here it the prospective time of trial interest both to the Legis 10 lie trial Generally From Brownsville WITH A HOTTLK Charles Harrison a Fanner Has Left Kar In an altercation yesterday after noon In a room above the saloon con ducted by Crixell on St Charles Harrison a fanner living about three miles from the city had the upper portion of his left ear sev ered and a gash cut in the side of his head necessitating several stitches by being struck with a beer bottle in Uie hands of someone In a statement made to County Attorney K II Goodrich and other reliable witnesses Harrison stated that he had lost a sum of money amounting to something like in a poker gams which was conducted in the room above and then he requested Teo filo Crixell to lean him and stat ed that he gave Teofilo an order on a leading merchant of this city for the same Crixell phoned to this merchant and the reply to the phone message was that he Harrison would have to come in person and get the money Words then ensued whereupon Crixell a beer bot tle ami struck Harrison upon the head with the above results Dr Fred 1 Combe attended to the wounds ot Harrison after which he Harrison phoned lo County Attorney Good rich telling him of the affray his own request Harrison was allowed to stay in the county jail last night A was filed against T Crixell for aggravated assault with intent to do bodily harm and he was arrested about t oclock this morning at the depot by Consta ble Justino Lopez as he Crixell was waiting for the train He av once made bond in the sum of 5200 to appear before county court at next third Monday term in December Har rison when seen this by a Herald representative stated that he was suffering too much physical pain to maKe a statement and that he had made all of the statements that he desired to make to the county attorney It was ascertained this morning that
