land adjoining La Lomita Ranch by W P Stites Ed W E Nickerson and Ed C Secretary of the South Texas Onion Growers Association This estimate was made in May while the Onions were In transit Since then plantation in Hidalgo county belong ing to Sheriff John Closner of that county embracing 7000 acres of land with GOO acres in cultivation 400 of which is planted with sugar the large sugar mill belong ing to the plantation has been sold by him to several Colorado capitalists The exact price paid has not been made public but is admitted by the interested parties to be in the neigh of a quarter of a million dollars The sale has been pending for some time and was consummated last Saturday being made through the American company of this Closner will give pos session of the plantation soon reserv ing only his cane and alfalfa fa This is one o most important land sales made in this valley in some time The purchasers expect to push immediate development of the property They are men of ex in irrigation being interest ed in the beet sugar industry North ern Colorado where they live is the enter of the richest and best develop ed beet sugar district in the United States From Ft Collins their home may be seen the smoke from six large sugar mills valued at to each The sugar beet industry has raised the value of lands in their section from to per acre in five years Naturally such men could easily discover in our valley lands greater opportunities for the sugar industry for cane here yields two or three times the tonnage anil fully as great a percentage of sugar as beets The San Juan Plantation which these capitalists have bought was one of the earliest developed cane planta tions in the Hio Grande valley and it has become justly famous for its line quality of sugar and large yield per acre Mr Closner began plant ing cane here fifteen years ago from which he at manufactured what is commonly known as but afterwards he put in a fine sugar mill and manufactured the product of his fields in sugar Some of first cane planted on the plantation still being harvested and making a paying yield of sugar It was from this cane that Mr Closner made the sugar that took the gold medal at the St Louis Worlds exposition in competition with cane from all over the world including the famous Eva plantation of Hawaii owned by Glaus the great sugar king of Hawaii This achievement of the Lower Rto Grande Valley product attracted the attention of sugar men from every land and will in bringing much more capital here to develop the sugar industry and make this valley the greatest sugar produc ing area in America It is the intention of the purchasers to increase the of the pump ing plant already on the plantation and greatly increase the acreage of cane the coming winter They will also enlarge the capacity of the sugar mill Adjoining their cane fields is some two thousand acres of land that will also be put under irrigation by canal and will be devoted to sugar cane the land being sold only to cane planters The canal already in operation on the tract will be extend ed to cover the entire tract and this will be sold in small tracts for fruit and truck growing Besides the cane and some other crops there are 150 acres in alfalfa most of which was planted last Octo ber The fifth cutting of alfalfa is now being made from this field the yield being about one ton per acre at each cutting This is selling readily in the field at per ton At least two of the purchasers of this land expect to make Texas their future home and will give their per sonal attention to the management of the property Closner expects as soon as he on page 2 BUSY SESSION OF CITY COUNCIL CITY TAX RATE FIXED FOB YEAR SAME AS LAST YEAR C5 CENTS ON VALU ATION City Attorney Reports Sale of City Water and Light Bonds to State at Matters of Importance Discussed Committees Appointed Etc A busy session of the city counci was held yesterday at the city hall Mayor Combe presided and the following aldermen were present Browne Champion and Celaya The principal business of the meet ing was perhaps that of fixing the tax rates for the ensuing year After much discussion pro and con it was decided upon motion of Alderman Crixell to leave the total rat th same as last year namely 65 cents on the valuation This total is divided as follows Water and light bond fund 25 cents on the valuation street and bridge fund 15 cents on decided on motion of Alderman Crix ell to leave the total rate the same fund twentyfive cents on the 100 valuation While the mat ter of reducing the tax rate was con in view of the fact that the values have been Increased this year yet it was decided that as the city has had and will have heavy ex penses In the way of building certain municipal Improvements and repair ing and improving the streets It would be impracticable to do so at present Mayor Combe informed the council that Alderman Tucker had been au to purchase an oil tank for the city at Corpus for the purpose of storing oil for the water and light plant The subject of the stock was discussed Some time ago the city attorney was instructed to draw up an ordinance to prohibit stock from being permitted to stray on the streets He he found a stock ordinance already on the city statute books The existing it sems does not include the entire city limits which would be impracticable since the city corpora tion actually extends three miles each way from the city hall and includes considerable territory that Is not even laid off in streets and blocks in which sections it would be impossible to pro hibit stray stock The matter of ex tending the limits under the existing ordinance was discussed at length but no decision was arrived at Upon motion of Alderman Cham pion the proposed ordinance author izing the appointment of a street and water commission to be composed of three members of the council to transact matters pertaining to the city water and light service The mayor appointed Messrs Tucker Browne and Dworman on this com The subject of a sewer system for the city was discussed Mayor Combe informed the council that the com of citizens that had been ap pointed at a meeting with officials of the St and Mexico road some time ago to consider the erection of a large modern hotel in Brownsville had found that nothing could be the matter until the city is provided with sewers and that it would be impossible to issue any bonds for the purpose as the city has already issued the full limit of bonds for public improvements allot ed by law under the present tax valu ations Nothing definite was decided in the matter but it was the general opinion that some definite steps must be taken to secure a sewer system soon The report of the former superin tendent of water and lights C R Moore was read by Secretary Cham pion Contractor was present and submitted plans for a new slaughter pen and house to cost ap proximately Alderman Dworman reported that the new York and Brownsville Improvement company through its E C Forto had consented to allow he city the use of sufficient ground for a new slaughter pen and house on the site formerly spoken of on the resaca north
