Ed W E Nickerson and Ed C Dustin Secretary of the South Texas Onion Growers Association estimate was made in May while the Onions were in then W P Stites and W E have return on shipments from the 43 litres which they cultivated Mr Dustin and Sir have not yet re ported results of their 64 acres The 43 acres reported on by Messrs Stites and Nicker son show the results in a year when the markets were un favorable of careful cultivation good and careful packing and early marketing of Bermuda Onions The 43 acres pro to 34 car loads containing 17001 crates netting the growers the commission men the crate men and the railroads Reduced to one acre acre paid net to the to the commission tothe crate men and to the railroads 1 This land was covered with brush and timber a year ago During July Complete Stock in South Texas O Refrigerators Gasoline Oil and Wood Cook OFFICE FURNITURE ETC ETC FURNITURE CO The Southern Texas Truck Grow ers Association otherwise called tlie Onion Growers Association which it appears is a misnomer has agreed to market general truck from South Texas in compliance with the request ot the South Texas Gardeners as placed before the association by R P Boeye oE Donna and Fred Warren of Kingsville As previously re ported these gentlemen are mem tiers of both organizations Mr War ren being president and Mr Boeye a director of the Southern Texas Truck Growers Association As representa tives of the South Texas Gardeners they placed the request that the as sociation undertake the marketing of general truck before the latter body as the meeting of the association at San Antonio and again met with the stock t holders of the association at Laredo this week to effect the final arrangements to that end It seems an erroneous impression had existed even on the some the members ot the association as to the scope of its powers under its charter it being believed by them that it was purely an onion growers association and could not handle other truck than onions without amending the charter That the con trary was true was declared by mem bers of the association at the Gar deners conference in Brownsville an results have proven that they were correct s Mr Boeye Tyho returned last night from Laredo reports that the asso was entirely of accord in the matter and agreed without a dissent ing vote to market all truck from South Texas The rate to be charged for this servce is placed at ten cents was not fixed however being consideration at later meeting of the directors It was decided to require shippers whose truck is handled to become members of the association although the amount of stock to be taken by each is no tyet announced Another meeting wil be held by the directors later in order to perfect details and make arrangements for the additional work which the asso has agreed to undertake An effort will be made as certain as nearly as possible the acreage o various vegetable pro ducts that will be placed on the mar ket From the gulf coast country The association is composed chief ly of onion growers and heretofore no other products have been handled by it hence the mistake arising as to the name of the organization The success which has attended the work of the organization in marketing crops has aroused the desire of the general truck growers to avail them selves of the business methods of the association for the marketing of thei products also as the inexperienced truck shippers have lost heavily in so many instances in attempting to market their products independently Mr Boeye spent today in the city but will return to his farm tomorrow He has attended two meet ings of the Gardeners in Brownsville and the meetings of the association at San Antonio and Laredo all at his besides devoting con time to this work but he expects to attend the meeting of the directors of the association which will be held in San Antonio the latter part of next week or the first of the following week for the purpose of deciding on what basis the general truck is to be handled and arrange details for doing the work While it is desired truck growers should become members of the association yet it is not fully de whether the usual price of sev en cents a crate charged by the asso for marketing onions will be applied on general truck Mr Boeye is anxious before this meeting occurs to hear from the truck growers of the valley on the subject and to re vive any suggestions which they may have to make in regard to the matter He is also anxious to learn about Continued on page 2 A LETTER OF INVITATION LETS GET the club is working LETS GET TOGETHER Dear Sir Knowing you to be interested in all things that tend to develop and in crease the earning capacity of the Lower Rio Grande Valley In general and its metropolis Brownsville we earnestly solicit your cooperation and support in a united movement by alt of the business interests pertain ing thereto Mistakes have been made but mis takes are valuable only as we profit by them What we want now is to get to gether with a United Front We will grant not for arguments sake but to prevent argument that The Gang has done all that the bal ance of mankind by its inaction has let it do but the present and future are so full of opportunities and pos that we have not the time to be looking backward We will grant not for arguments sake but to keep out of argument that same of the newcomers with their push and energy their wits and ability and their mucho dinero are making things turn double somer saults but that they are to make their heels break their necks We will s it not for sake but avoid argument that the oldtimers by their inaction block the wheels of progress but we must admit that were it not for blocking the wheels of progress would have more punctured tires than they now have We will grant not for sake but to dodge argument that some of tlie newcomers want some thing for nothing and failing to get it get out their hammers and knock things instead of driving things We will grant not for sake but to avoid argument that if the Mikado would play here that Koko would sing Theres the Universal Knocker With his knocker always out Who knocks everything but knockers As he daily knocks about When he himself out By knocking every man He turns and knocks the waters Of our dear old Rio Grande Lets knock a mob together And go and
