Bullion W E Nickerson and Ed C Austin Secy Texas Onion Growers Association rented of W S Dougherty 107 acres of land for an onion crop at per acre adjoining La Lomita ranch September October and November they plowed aud prepared their land and planted their seed beds During De cember they transplanted their onions to the field May 4th 1908 87 cars of onions were shipped av 500 or more crates per car and selling at and better per crate It is safe to estimate the returns from these 107 acres of onions to be not less than for a crop which it took less than 9 months to produce and sell The CITY TwentyFive Members Enrolled Of Were Elected and Organiza tion Fairly by Judge Allen on Object and History of the Order A most important meeting took place in this city yesterday afternoon when the committee which was ap pointed some time ago to take steps towards securing the construction of a hotel here which shall be adequate to the needs of the city held a meet ing at the office of Capt Wm Kelly tor the purpose of inaugurating such a move Those present were James A Browne president of the First Na tional Bank Judge E C Porto man ager ofthe New York and Browns ville Improvement Company and Captain Wm Kelly who were appointed on the committee or and Col Uriah Lett the well known railroad builder F who was also appointed on the committee was the only member of the committee absent he being out of the city Col Lott was invited to meet the committee and was asked to become a member in view of his wide exper and influence enter prises of importance as well as in view the great interest which he has taken in the of Brownsville In fact the subject of building a large modern hotel in Brownsville has been given much study by Col Lott for month past and he has drawn a plan for a splen did hotel which would cost from 150000 to to contain 250 rooms or more This hotel it has betn his hope would constructed with the aid of James Stillman great New York banker who was bom at and who has de clared his intention to do something substantial for his native town He has named the projected structure the Stillman and the plans are as would do credit even to so prom inent a man as the great financier This plan has been placed before the committee by Col Lott It was suggested however by Col Lott that it would be useless to un to organize a stock company to build a great hotel here until the town should be provided with a sew er system This objection voiced the idea of every one present The im possibility of the city issuing more bonds for the construction of a sew er was stated by Mayor Combe but it was suggested that some plan might be adopted by which the plant could be constructed without the city issuing bonds It was proposed in fact that the county be requested to assist city in the enterprise and plans devised whereby the system might be constructed without the city having to issue bonds for the purpose Mayor Combe assured the commit tee that he would have the matter placed before the city council and see that steps were taken at once to solicit the aid of the county in the matter committee thereupon ad to meet later when plans will be submitted for the erection of a hotel and securing a site for the same No steps will be taken to wards securing subscriptions to a stock company to build the proposed hotel until after the next meeting A married womans of a satis factory compromise is to have her husband agree to do just what she wishes him to do The national convention of the pro party will be held in Colum bus Wednesday and Thursday Last night a number of citizens met at the Woodmen of the World hall and organized a new fraternal insur ance order known as the Grand Fra The meeting was presided over by C C Ellison general superintendent of the Grand Fraternity for South Texas The organization was com with an enrollment of 25 members The following officers were elected commander FrediE Starck vice commander Hy Verhelle past com mander regent Frank C Pierce recorder Jose R Menchaca guide A sentry T R Tate guard Ino Thielen marshal W B Andrews Judge Noah Allen after the elec tion oC officers addressed the meeting upon the stability and worthiness of the order Having recently re turned from Philadelphia where he attended the meeting of the govern ing council of the order held in that city last month he was well equipped to discuss its merits Other talks were made on the same subject by Messrs Ellison and Hinsley the or Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served after the work was Cigars also formed part of the refreshment
