to over a thousand carloads said General Manager Miller of the St Louis Brownsville and Mexico railroad this morning to a HERALD reporter who met him at the station This is fully fifty per cent increase over truck shipments from this region for the some season last year he continued which fully sustains the confidence of the company in the rapid development ol this wonderful country The was ship win an exar Calvin on These trial before Justice of the of Cattle Theft Stockmen Have Been Losing Cattle for Some Time and Rangers with Deputy Sheriff Were Laying for the Thieves Caught with the Hides and Beef Last night about twelve oclock four prisoners were placed in the county jail iu this city having been arrested at the Sauz ranch about 70 miles from town on charge of cattle theft by Rangers Clark and Smith and Deputy Sheriff Jose Longoria For some time stockmen in the vicinity of the Sauz which is one of the King ranches have been complaining of the depredations of cattle thieves and the officers named had gone out there from Brownsville to endeavor to catch the guilty parties It was known that there was a gang of cattle thieves operating in that section The officers began making investi gations with the result that they encountered four men who had in their possession several cowhides and a quantity of fresh beef for which they were unable to account to the Secy Texas Onion Growers Association rented of W S Dougherty 107 acres of land for an onion crop at per acre adjoining La Lomita ranch During September October and November they plowed and prepared their land and planted their seed beds During De cember they transplanted their onions to the field 1908 87 cars of onions were 500 or more crates per car and selling at and better per crate It is safe to estimate the returns from these 107 acres of onions to be not less than for a crop which it took less than 9 months to produce and sell The above parties have sirce bought land from La Lomita near Calvin They were shipped on May 18 two days previous to the shipment from Falfurrias These melons said were sold by the growers at Calvin f o b for net The car con 932 melons which averaged 24 12 pounds thus bringing the growers a little over 40 cents per melon or nearly two cents per pound Mr Miller was accompanied here by T J McCune of transportation J D Finnigan Treasurer of tlie road and also by his private secretary Herbert Dennett and clerk J D Powers He was joined here by Wm Doherty traffic manager who had been here a couple of days These officials arrived in the city last night in the private cars St Elmo and Paisano attached to a freight train They left this morn ing for San Benito to inspect some work on the road there They will return to Kingsville tonight Traffic Manager Doherty who joined here is authority for the statement that there will be about fifty or sixty cars of water melons shipped from this section this season and that shipments will last for several weeks There some onions potatoes and other products to be shipped out before the season is ended and the road will be quite busy for several weeks longer handling the crop Will Pull In Double Harness But from San Houston and intermediate places as a very low rate was advertised from these points to Brownsville for the bull fights to take place in Malamoros tomorrow Lodgings will be in demand here tonight There will doubtless be several hundred visitors looking for a place to lay their heads and it is hoped that all who have lodg ings to let will have representatives at the station to pilot he
