Oklahoma besides the ner daughter WHAT SAYS NATIONAL NEWSPAPER WEEK Last week was National Newspaper Week and all of the slaves of the newspaper game were supposed to stand up on their toes and yell about the great and grand things the newspapers have done in the past and what they expect to do in the future This paper is not interested in gloating and sounding forth to the public If we are doing a good job the people who read paper know in reverse if we are doing a poor job they know it Then why blow off steam But Duane Dewel of the Kossuth County Advance at Algona had something to say about newspaper folk that is about what we would have said if we had the power of expression that Duane has Here it is Read for THIS IS NATIONAL newspaper week when are to pat themselves on the back and tell themselves what great guys they The Old Goat definitely doesn't want to fool himself and be- sides a pat on the back would make him suspicious as heck After all the years of being blamed for everything that goes wrong in a town the average newspaperman could not stand appreciation In the first place he knows darn well he won't get any People are too concerned with the thing right in front of their nose The Old Goat doesn't say all newspapermen are paragons of virtue Many newspapermen are just as big stinkers as the average run of people Their trouble is the business they are in You can't write a guy up for his depredations when yah got a depredation on your conscience That's the trouble with most newspapermen It's not their great and glowing concern for the human race After treading the straight and narrow path for a good many years the newspaperman gets used to it But with a few exceptions they do take their work pretty seriously and it's their duty to save the pubLc from itself And there's no greater critic of a wayward than another newspaperman THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION It seems to me the emancipation proclamation was not broad enough It probably meant the freeing of the black man from slavery day of 1951 we have more millions of slaves than we had before Abe Lincoln issued his proclamation And no doubt honest Abe never thought that within one short century the whites would outnumber the blacks as slaves If you are in business and have thousands upon ands of dollars invested in your or will ret my meaning THIS GETTING OLD We buried a woman the other day who was outstanding in one respect spent 82 years and 2 months in Iowa but nobody ever thought of her as old She never celebrated a birthday and pronounced as did Mark Twam at a birthday party I AM She went about her affairs the same as a woman half her age walked as straight as a high school girl drove her car greeted people the same as she had been A Report From H L of Garner sales for the county to date as reported by the federal reserve bank are while the quota is Sales for all counties in Iowa amounted to for the same period an increase of since the report of a week ago We can get a fair estimate of our progress by considering that the accounting period for the drive will cover approximately ten the chairman said and as of this report we should have attained 40 per cent of our ty's quota The reported figures aren't ways he continued be- cause some banks don't report sales each week and there is an unavoidable lag in the reports due to the time required for
