announced that I it is that the letters should not bs over to 1 say that quite as much m the interest ot this poor lady as in the interests of and I think the better plan will bo for mo to retain tlie letters and not produce them at all unless tUG are denied which I do not think for a moment will be tho case I do not propose that the letters should leave my custody When the inquiry is ow the question will bo raised as to what I better do with them Mr My client courts the fullest gation The 1 quite that nothin in the letters of Mrs will be denied in any way therefore I do not think it worth white to hand tho letters to you or to any of the legal gentlemen engaged Mr Hepworth representing the relations of the deceased and the executors hero observed that ho some difficulty under those circumstances m putting certain questions The Tho letters will be in evidence were handed over to the police and have been in custody up till now My only object is as as possible not to drag unnecessary matters before the public I have read the letters carefully and I do not think there is anything in them which will prove to be important An application afterwards I shall be prepared to consider Mr Phillips J entirely agree with your view sir The evidence of previous witnesses was then read over One of these Samuel Gaskarth the guard was strongly pressed by Mr Phillips as to whether the tram did not nearly stop at Roade station Gaskarth swore that the train did not slow down below fifteen miles an hour at that spot to separate I have sent your to and ho will forward it to-day You will bo best here if you can get rid of morbid fancies your husband That is a very proper and a very affectionate letter What we waut to know is what Is the of mind you thought your wife in There must have been some question of separation between you Dr Bryan weeping bitterly t Her mind was dis- turbed sir The I am bound to put the questions but J assure you Dr Bryan that they aro quite as painful to mo as to you What sort oi a temperament had your wife was aho emotional Witness Sho was Was she of a nervous organisation I should not call it nervous but impulsive When you say she was in a disturbed state of do you refer to her affection for Mr Ashton Her next letter to you from Eastbourne was that in which sho told you that Mrs had insulted her Have you the letters with me Mr I have one here the last letter ehe ever wrote Thc letter was the coroner and Dr Bryan seeing it again gave way to tears sobbing audibly Tho Coroner read as My dear lam a littlo uncertain whether I shall get meet I was misled that is all and before God f am Let me send you one bit of love I expect I shall be back this letter arrives Love to Mrs bell Your HILDA Witness I received that letter Use morning after her death J have not seen the umbrella found in the coupe It was not my wife's property and it never was mine The Coroner your wife ever attempted or threatened to commit suicide f to Mr Phillips witness added that he had given no cause for a separation Has anything happened to blight your your wife's integrity and loyalty Dr Bryan Never sir In regard to the memory of your wife nothing has happened to shako your belief in her faith and loyalty to you am certain she faithful and loyal to me Mi- Would you be surprised to hear she has left you a substantial legacy had no idea of it A telegram signed by quoted at a previous hearing was now explained to havo been sent by a Mr Richard Hunt who was The Coroner observed that the contents important necessary that Mr Ashton should answer it At the same time xf he wishes to take the r may do BO The witness then retired rf that eho was the wife Ashton merchant of Visited from that tiniest Ue beforo tho of Win H i M tha attachment between iand Thia to Jotter from Dr n which she had destroyed Tho effect of letter was that Harold and his Dr wife u do what could m the matter cautiously She went to f told hep die came from Dr Bryan hotel and from Harold to implore her to go home and leave L to Harold and injurious to to Mrs Bryan replied if she heard irom own lips that tho s up was to end it should Witness time after time that Mrs Bryan would no it from her own lips as sho Va9 On her expressing hcr sorrow at home hW in Further examined Mrs said deceased after- wards cut hcr at Eastbourne atottS had a peculiar expression and looked fixedly it without On reaching home she found the letter from deceased awaiting her I forgive you God docs not treated following you have mo each Mrs Mr Phillips and Mrs Ashton the rs laughed m replying to some questions as to whether aho had over before aeon the unidentified what are you laughing at Phillips to which Mrs Ashton retorted think I was laughing at your Mr Phillips Did you quoting the letter daughter of tho S WM bad aod the most executor were not i A i1 treated her as one lady would treat another Mr Well if it is false there is nothing to laugh about Yes immediately the train stopped there William Harold Ashton was next sworn and described himself as a journalist He is a clean shaven youthful man of sallow complexion and a what pronounced cast of features and is of slim build and medium height Ho said his home was at Huntingdonshire Ho was now living iri Brixton lie waa a journalist employed in London where he went on the 9th Nov Previous to that he had been at Northampton He first made the acquaintance of Mrs Uryan two years aud a half ago and he was iu the visiting ot hcr house and thero was friendship between them The When did this feeling of friendship something stronger You and she were attached to each other Witness Yes well I really could not say when but it was not very long after say a few mouths Did she become equally attached believe she did How old are you Witness added that ho had frequent opportunities of her at Northampton and she was very much cut up about his leaving Northampton Have you heard anything of the incident of Mrs Bryan having taken strychnine About when would that bo was I think the evening of tbe afternoon when I told her I was going to London That was 1 believe in October I went to bid her good-bye after that and saw her and her mother When she took strychnine did you know whether it was intentionally or otherwise I do not know whether the occasion you refer to is the e veiling when ahe took something I was at house I suppose it would be the evening of the day I told her I was going to leave In which room was she stairs in the surgery I was upstairs with her and the servant came and said aba wanted to see me Can you tell mo plainly whether you understand the taking of this poison was an attempt to take away her life or whether it an Really I do not know Did she say any tiling why she took it do not remember it I was not present she took it very excited and ill afterwards Did she when she found you were to London threaten to commit suicide on that she said a lot of incoherent things anil I could not pay whether she did or not Patrick McGregor another guard speaking as an expert said that any person endeavouring to alight irom a train moving at fifteen miles an hour would be a fool Railway Inspector Haines and replying to Mr Phillips said the windows and doors ot a coupe would be slightly narrower than the windows and doors of an ordinary compartment Some did not go down within seven indies of the framework of the door others went quite down There would not be more than seven inches of board to the rear of the door Out of tho seren inches four inches would be taken up by the solid wooden support of the end of the carnage so there would only be available three inches for the foot Would three inches be sufficient to enable a person to step out and turn the handle so as to close the door before jumping upon the line I think so Mr Phillips followed this answer by asking if it was probable but this was ruled out Air Have there been cases where men cave been concealed in lavatories on your line don't know of an instance Mr Hockin r There has been a case of himself so as not to be called on for hig ticket A Juryman Would it not have been fora person to make his exit from the coupe at ton and join the other fourteen passengers without seen Witness No The Juryman Of course such a person would not oft recognised as a suspected murderer or of sort Witness I don't think any person could have done so He would have had to come up tho platform because on this occasion the coupS came to a still under the bridge The Juryman There was no suspicion that was wrong J Witness was I am asking an important question Would not have been time for euch A person to leave the for another part of tho train Witness No Thero was no sign of any struggle Smart in the employ of tho com- pany produced certain articles belonging to the deceased which he received from Kailway Inspector Hames jacket was not in any way torn and the hat seemed to have been taken off the head Tho garments did not suggest that anything like a struggle had occurred Other articles were a dictionary and two hymn books In a dress basket of tho deceased which he opened at Northampton ho found jewellery money and the letters now handed to the coroner The latter were in a small leather case and were the letters which were given into the custody of the police There wero also in tho basket a second packet of letters now tied up in brown a deed of assignment relating to a villa a rent book a fire policy and a diary The Coroner In the interests of tho Hertfordshire police and public I would like to know whether the information obtained by the press was given before these articles left No sir I may take it that no information has been given by you relative to these documents sir Can you account for these facts being gleaned by the press Mr I cannot They have ways that are The Coroner In this case the publication of the documents and the suggestion of their contents have done no harm I am not sure that it has not done good because it has enabled us to get a sorb of gleaning of the necessary evidence but there may bo cases in which tiie publication of such matters would lead a gross miscarriage of justice It was necessary that I should put this question to show that the police are doing their duty as well as the railway officials A Have you made inquiries about the umbrella found in the but Supt Frogley has Replying to one of the jury the coroner gave the titles of the books found amongst luggage One wai the Congregational Church Hymnal another was Hynms Ancient and Modern containing the inscription To my dear little M Bryan The third was Dictionary and it contained the name Mrs J M Answering Mr Phillips witness said other persons had access to the basket containing tho letters before it came into his possession cries of u Oh lie did not search it until Sunday and it might have been searched by means of keys bet ween Saturday morning from T D I I v-r A 11 n rt v waa briefly examined on the subject of the interview at Eastbourne Her sisters overheard Mrs say to Mrs don't call me In the course of conversation with her mother Mrs Bryan did not threaten suicide but was some reference made to suicide The evidence being concluded Mr Phillips asked to be allowed to address tho jury in support of the view that suicide was impossible and that the verdict must bo an open one of Found dead The Coroner said ha could not depart from a rule which had hitherto obtained by hearing addresses Irom legal gentlemen He at once proceeded to sum up ami commented on tho salient of tho evidence He remarked upon the discovery of tho strange umbrella in the and whiles regarding this ns mysterious hii considered the absence of tho slightest sign of a struggle as conclusively opposed lo tho presence of a second person Thuro was no evidence in support of the theory of accident Tho foreman asked if it was not feasible to suppose that if the umbrella had belonged to m thc case tho real owner would havo claimed it m The Coroner advised the jury not much importance to that He read a letter from Mr Willis magistrates clerk of Coventry the ing compartment of the train and who thought that it anyone had knocked at tho partition or screamed ho must have Tim Coroner paid a tribute to the work of Superintendent Frogley and the railway officials and added that with regard to the disclosure of certain of the documents in the press ho had arrived at a solution exonerated tho railway officials and tho police m Tlie jury retired and after 25 minutes tion Matilda Bryan met with her death by being ran over by a train on tho London and ostern Kailway but there is no evidence to prove how sho came there The foreman added that the jury desired to express their clepp sympathy with Dr Bryan Dr Bryan having before the verdict wan given au friend Dr Williams thanked tho jury ou his behalf and the proceedings ended After you went to London did you and she up a correspondence in the present year hue was at Catford and paid her frequent visits Comedown to July to when sho formed the resolution to return home to husband When ehe concluded hcr last visit to did she make up her mind to return to her husband Was there some understanding between you that she would be doing right to go to her at any rate sho go back for a time and sec if she could stand it Those were her words to me A Juror Was tho intercourse platonic or illicit Tho Coroner If you that Tho Juror I all sincerity f The Let me The answers to my tion first To tho witness What did you understand her to mean by saying that she could not stand it Sho was very unhappy She went back home and told me she thought it was right to do so After she got home did you hear from her left again at the beginning of Yes Before sho left homo sho me and said her doctor told her that if she remained in Northampton ehe would not be a live a month She said she was Buffering from general depression Did you eee her at Eastbourne Was there any question of separation between her and her husband wanted to got a separation She told me sho should try to get one and she bad written to her husband subject Did you receive a telegram irom her on the when she left for home between seven and in the evening it Meet mo cross at eight o'clock I did not meet her as I was just finishing some work When did you see her was walking down in the direction of aud I met her in What state was she in than usually BO Did she tell you anything that had happened said my mother had been down to seo her aud then she said I shall go home to-night Did she Bay why she said she could not ruin my life and sho could not break my mother's heart Did she say she should take her own all No nothing at all Did she appear to bo J afterwards accompanied her to Euston in a hansom after A'S JUBILEE DEATH OF THE QUEEN'S GIRAFFE Thc death was announced on Tuesday morning of tho accident Queen's Jubilee animal which had been presented to her Majesty by tho chief Khama as a Jubilee gilt The giraffe was brought to England in the cave of Herr a tive of the Zoological Society It was a splendid male specimen standing high and it was hoped that it would become the mate of the female giraffe at present housed in park On his arrival in Africa Herr Windhorn hail to go up country to fetch it He found it was remarkably and walked it to thc nearest railway station it was boxed brought clown by rail to Capetown and put on board the Koglin Castle one of Donald liners which sailed tor England on the 1st of September weather was encountered on voyage aud after Cape tie Verd the giraffe to take food Tho help of tlie ship's baker was sought and Rome special brown bread made but even this did cot tempt the sick animal On the 15th of September the ship arrived at Madeira and on the following dav a tele- gram was received from Herr Windhorn stating his tears that giraffe won Id die before reaching where all these liners call The in London could do nothing but wait patiently and on Sunday their hopes were revived by the receipt of another telegram Mr the superintendent to be at the East India Docks on Monday morning to land the giraffe THE Tho unloading at the docks was carried out under the direction of Sir Clarence and presented no extraordinary difficulty Still ifc was riot deal with an immense box containing an animal 13 fact high The problem of however was got over by a telescopic arrangement by which the front part of the box was lowered to about eight feet The interior was carefully padded so as to save its inmate front being bruised by the motion of the ship and thc jolting in conveying it to the Gardens While Mr was busy taking the Regent's Park Mr Thomson was busy in tho Gardens getting ready for its reception The gate in the iron railing of the giraffe's paddock was removed and thc ground levelled so as to prepare A good roadway for the trolly on Which thc big case was to bo brought in Shortly before four o'clock on Monday afternoon thc giraffe house was closed to the public and all thc space behind the superintendent's was shut oft by the erection of a stout barrier over which two police officers kept guard This was done lo allow the garden staff to work undisturbed by the pressure of a crowd DOG SHOW At tbe Rifle a high-class under Kennel day and the management to bo congratulated upon the success attending their leaves little to be desired lor it embraces every recognised breed and what is eminently many of the leading breeders have forwarded entries Although the in their tions do not style the exhibition an annual one it is by no the first Jms been carried out under their auspices Bristol ought really to have an annual fixture ot the mud but tho aro great and to meet these there be a responsible executive This is woat certainly the case with tho present show and to be hoped that by the success which they deserve the Bristol Dog Show will be recognised as one of the leading fixtures in tho country Last year the club only held a closed show but in 1895 the exhibition waa and held in the and earned for a splendid reputation The control of matters is quite in the right hands and it is to be hoped that it will remain there The general arrangements at the hall were in every sense worthy of tho occasion and thanks to this the judging went through smoothly without loss of time and there was an absence of that confusion which was such a marked feature of some of the earlier shows when control was vested elsewhere Mr F Cross ig the of the club and he is backed up by a committee of practical men Mr Reginald the former hon secretary has retired but he takes a responsible part in committee work The duties of secretary now entrusted to Mr Alban Young who shows all the aptitude necessary for grappling with the mass of detail which baa to be in good order The following was the published list oi called He is a gentleman of middle age well set up with iron grey hair and a heavy pointed moustache He appeared to be ing great mental distress and having accepted a chair he answered the questions put to him in a very tone Replying to the coroner Mr Bryan I am an and and have been registered since 1865 J married the deceased twelve years ago She was then 17 and I was over 40 In 1893 there was some trouble between us I was to blame on that occasion My wife did not threaten to commit suicide She left me for a short time but since then we have lived on the best of terms Do you know Mr William Harold Ashton am sorry to say 1 do When did you make his acquaintance year last Christmas Was he a visitor at your house Was a great friendship struck up between them was a friendship certainly that ripen into something stronger and did they become attached to each other did sir Ashton engaged at Northampton at that time in journalistic work he left a year ago I understood it to better his position It was before he left that I discovered the attachment I a letter in which Ashton addressed my wife by her Christian name She was upset losing a friend Was it not a fact that your wife at that time made some attempt on her I do not look upon it in that light I think I had better say that she u red from a weak heart and on my advice she took a little strychnine as a pick-me-up She used to take a few drops from the surgery against which I her A year last August she took a few nipro drops than she had intended but Dr Cress well being in she was treated by him and recovered was I think before Ashton's departure from Northampton Your wife was in the habit of staying a great deal from home Northampton not suit her Mie was never well there 1 always knew where she wats staying In March she was staying at Catford where two of her cousins resided I knew she was in communication with Ashton and I did my best to stop it On the Monday before the deceased went to Eastbourne Before her departure no tion of a permanent separation was On her there she gent roe a telegram followed by a letter The letter did not contain a to Ashton or any reference to a separation My memory is not good now but so far as I remember there was none I cannot say the letter showed her to be in a distressed state of mind Coroner taking up a packet of With regard to these the facts ara admitted and that is an end of them but I will ask you to take this letter dated 1st September in your liand arid tell us if it is your handwriting Dr Bryan Lifter the document said it was The So you still say that in your wife s Jotter from Eastbourne there was no reference to Two umbrellas were handed to the witness he identified one as that of lady The umbrella ho saw nothing of Further When the got into tho railway carriage there was nobody with her I paid an excess fare to Northampton aa there were no second-class compartments The Has she ever threatened suicide if separated from you Witness I don't remember that but ehe told me she was often in fear of committing suicide and that she fought against it Mr rhillips began his cross-examination witness by asking if he first saw Mrs Bryan at place of business in on the evening upon which she returned from Eastbourne lie adhered to his assertion that he met Mrs Bryan in and was not aware tbat she called at his office Mr Phillips I know a good deal and I warn vou to tell the truth Further pressed aa to the exact circumstances under which met Mrs Bryan on that particular tho jury received Ashton's answers with some murmurings and the coroner observed I roust ask AT THE ZOO In an interesting account of the arrival of the giraffe at the the Standard says that about four Witness J really cannot recollect Coroner It is hardly likely you would refer to it unless fche had previously done so i don't think she did but she may have dene her letter to you from Eastbourne show she was in a state of mind Sho might have said Mrs Ashton li ad insulted her Tho Foreman Will you read tho letter Mr The Yes kites WAS accordingly read as the jury not to give utterance to any expression Mr Phillips On your oath did you go inside the first-class carriage at Euston No Mr Phillips handed to witness the umbrella not identified and said Look ut it is it not yours Witness No Examine have examined it for an hour Have you said it was yours havo said it was not mine You were received its a friend of husband and wife When Dr Bryan requested you not to write to his wife why did you not abandon the lady don't know why I am sure You knew she was a woman and in spite of the husband's letters asking you to leave her alone you still communicated with her The Coroner suggested that this line examination was scarcely Mr Phillips thereupon quoted tho last letter of the wife to her husband already put and asked who it was that misled Mrs Witness I don't know i think she was unhappy By Mr He heard of hcr death two hours before he left for with his mother It was from a journalist at Northampton that ho heard Mis Bryan was dead and that letters had been found in his handwriting Mr Hepworth How long had this persecution been going on persecution How long had you known this lady years and a half Wero you in correspondence with her time she was away from You did not suggest to her that she should go back to her home don't remember You were a friend of the husband I knew him very well And lie never horsewhipped you My Mr Coates When lie first made the of thc family Dr Bryan said lie would be pleased if witness up his wife by taking her to public entertainments The Perhaps you will look at this letter of your own and say whether you would wish it to be read Witness after looking at the I think there is any need to read it The Foreman Will it be put in to the jury The Coroner I do not think so I am giving Mr the opportunity of having any of his letters read or not The In the that ruling maj I repeat my question whether platonic Coroner a Question which -J do not o'clock a Pickford's van arrived loaded with too containing tho animal followed cart in which were several travelling cages contain ing cranes The birds however received scant attention Everyone was intent on giraffe which was certainly alive when the van left the docks and probably when it drove into the at thc back of the old emu sheds The unloading here was no easy bulk rather than the weight of the caso made it extremely to handle Tho van was backed to a piece of brickwork which from a broad Hat surface sloped gently to tho ground To this by means of planks and rollers the case waa transferred by tho keepers who worked with a will and then by means ot other planks it slid on to a low trolly and dragged out of the yard into the pathway that leads thence round the back of the elephants house News that something unusual was going on had spread among the visitors and the space outside the barrier and along tho side of the hippopotamus pond waa densely packed After a few rest there was a fresh start and tho trolly was dragged slowly on MOMENTS OF SUSPENSE The few who stood iu the paddock on Monday when tbe trolly was hauled into the centre will not soon forget the feeling of suspense which possessed them while the carpenters set to work to unscrew tbe strips which had been fastened across the doorway It seemed as if tho screws would never come out But class dog her Grace the of Newcastle exhibited and took the Jirst prize with Ch Golub Mrs Hood Wright was a good second with 95 The whole of this was very highly commended Tho Duchess of Newcastle won in the open bitch rather easily and double success cleared the way for an appropriation ol the brace premium From the high sport of hunting Siberian wolves the next class brought the spectator down to the more prosaic level ot coursing English hares and tlie classes of greyhounds on view wero a splendid collection a bench point of view Thc rabbit snatchers whippets can scarcely be expected to be a numerous lot in this part of tho country although at one time they were numerous in tlm local colliery where possibly they were kept more actual work than for exhibition purposes The winners included some fine specimens and the sum tho owners placed as the selling price in the catalogue was prohibitive a Crystal Palace winner being returned at The pointers and setters showed up well tlie latter having tho advantage in actual numbers with of course tho additional attraction of variety thrown in There was more than one capital retriever and their cousins the coats totted up just LI few more but the retrievers as a section were not so strong as might have been expected TJio spaniels were in great force the fields having several classes to themselves looked a handy workable lot The Irish water type were represented by a brace only liasset came out fairly strong both the close and the wire-haired shown Mr E u local exhibitor took a second prize in more than one class Thc competition waa very keen right through the whole of these classes and the quality will bo gathered from the heavy markings ou thu judges slips The dachshunds faced their more massive relations but fell away ably hi numbers Mr K S Woodiwiss did in the ordinary class and team competitions There were some eight harriers all of whom if appearances Jiro to be trusted arc likely triers over a country There wore only two exhibitors Mr J Baldwin arid Mrs E Batman and honours were fairly easy COLLIES poos TERRIERS Collies well maintained their reputation right through In the dog rough puppy class there was a most pleasing representation hi tho rough class Stretch's Diamond arrested attention lie has a splendidly typical head and is exceedingly welI coated Thursday's j put a great his credit Taking the division a whole it was quite a leading feature of the show and in itself made an exhibition of considerable size and undeniable quality The local classes thoroughly shared in tlie credit which the breed wins for itself The old English sheep dogs quite deserved tho share of admiration falling to their lot Mr T P Jones made things lively for thc other exhibitors thc first prize in thc three leading classes Mr W C Hinckley and Mr W 11 also headed a class each In the Dalmatians there seems to bo a growing competition there being several local exhibitors Mr K T Parker stated on Thursday that this was the last time he should exhibit his known Coming Still Ho intends to retire altogether from showing thc reason being a domestic affliction in which sad trial he will have the sympathy of a largo circle Mr Parker lias been a sum for Coming Still but this has won for him such a big array of prizes over ti K Limit or bitch smooth JPr d v h c Mrs Limit dog or hitch
