Stories from the rich history of Brazoria County School different at turn of century By Marie Beth ones Special to The Facts Gladys Wertz and her sister Nadine attended a little coun try school in a building on Austin Bayou about two miles from their home Young people were accus to walk ing good dis tances around the turn of the 20th century and they usual ly made their way on foot across the open prairie to reach their small school Cattle still moved at will on an unfenced range that extend ed from well beyond Houston to the Gulf and on some days herds of them could be seen grazing along their route These animals were far from tame and they presented a dan ger to pedestrians When Gladys parents saw them near they drove the children to school or picked them up To herds of cattle their only master was a rider on Gladys wrote One afternoon as she returned home she was followed and then chased by a large bull she described as the monarch of the Her mother who had noticed the small herd by which her daughter must pass hurriedly harnessed a team and ran it on the gallop to meet Gladys arriving just in time to pick up the winded girl when the bull was no more than a block away Texas history was among the subjects taught at the school and years later Gladys remembered being taught about the treachery of Santa Ana at the Alamo the bravery of Crockett and Afterschool snacks were a bit different then and the Wertz children came home in the late afternoons to eat warm yams just out of the oven sizzling in their own sweet The two sisters chores were allotted differently Gladys was designated to help her mother in the house while Nadine helped with the chores outside One of the regular duties about which Gladys wrote was using clabber to stir up pancakes for the breakfast She stood at the kitchen stove as they baked on two or three grid dles for a family of seven and remembered that she never got to eat till all had been Reading was one of her favorite pastimes and she had treasured memory of reading and rereading aloud the nov els of Charles Dickens as well as and such other books as Vanity Jane Eyre which she called her favorite which I all but shrimper remained in the Freeport jail Sunday after being arrested by another law enforcement agency But Freeport police are saying little about how Andrew Anthony Woodard 20 of Wharton County could be involved in the death of Hein Van Ha say ing the investigation still is ongoing Were still investigating to determine what all did hap Freeport Police Detective Sgt Bruce Houston said Sunday Woodard was arrested by the Wharton County Sheriffs Department around Saturday at his mothers house in Boling and he was brought back to Brazoria County on Sunday A bond amount hadnt been set yet We finally got a tip come in to the police sta tion which led us to his Freeport Police Chief Jeff Pynes said When we got the tip he was out of our area so we coordinated with the other law enforcement
